I like Amoeba fine, though it's Berkeley, not LA. But to think it's the best thing in Los Angeles... How long has it been there? Maybe eight or ten years? Perhaps it just strikes me as a rather shallow choice; I try not to think of Los Angelenos as shallow. I subscribe to Los Angeles magazine (among 80 or so I subscribe to and read cover-to-cover each month), but haven't ever lived in Southern California. I voted against Amoeba about half the time.

Edited to note: Amoeba arrived in LA six years ago.

I was there a couple of times, but I just wasn't in a buying mood. I think I was more interested in raga at the time and they had pretty much the same stuff that Tower, NYC had at the time.

It sure was a big store!

On average, I probably visit each of the Amoebas twice a year (though I'd bet its been five years since I bought anything there; it's mainly a time-kill and "let's see what's new" on a US travel layover.) No doubt, the LA store is impressive, bigger even than SF, by my reckoning. But I still see Amoeba as a Bay Area, specifically Berkeley, thing.

So I guess Angelenos love their adopted child more?

was in SF in January and picked up a rare CD used, for $20, that is probable worth about $100 - I like Amoeba - also, they gave Devilin Tune a nice review in their book, so they must be intelligent and discerning music lovers -

My favorite was Aron's, which was in the same part of Hollywood and went out of business a few years after Amoeba arrived. Amoeba is such a zoo I tend to avoid it, but I can't knock their selection.

But fergawdsakes, better than Topanga Canyon? The Weather? Getty Center? 99 cent Stores? In-N-Out? The Hollywood Sign? Sunset Blvd? Taco Trucks? Disneyland?!

The Central Library?

It's quite a nice library.

I see plenty of shallowness on the list, so it fits.

From the SF Chron gossip columnist on Wednesday:

"... and Tim Sullivan says that rock guitarist Jimmy Page spent five hours checking out blues selections at Amoeba on Monday."

Just noticed someone checking this thread out.

Matriculated in the general Bay Area. Still hit up both Amoeba stores whenever in town the location.

Depending on what you're looking for there is also. Jazz Quarter was great, but the owner died and it closed. Big Al's closed this year.

Don't forget Tommy's World Famous Hamburgers!

Native Los Angelenos such as myself know all the shallow people are transplants from other states.

A full 60% of all those living in SoCal are from someplace else.

As a former LA/OC resident, born and raised, I absolutely agree with you. I had to move to the San Joaquin Valley to find the Native Californians [like myself].
