Like the mindless consumer that I am, I slavishly bought this on Tuesday, and have watched a disc a night. I am enjoying it tremendously -- the picture quality is fantastic, though I think splitting up the channels into 5.1 sort of dumbs down the sound from what I remember as being really dynamic. Too bad there is no commentary on any of these.

One thing though: last night I saw Temple of Doom and I swear they messed with the editing on this picture. There were scenes inserted and I think some deleted, to keep a fast pace throughout the picture. The special effects were definitely cleaned up, notably the scene where they are hanging off the bridge and the bad guys are falling into the water. I never had the video tape of this movie, so I can't compare, but does anyone else notice the slight changes? An example of the addition is where Indy and the others first arrive at the village where they are told about their plight -- there is a shot where they show the village looking down from a hill that I don't remember.

Anyways, this is real fussy of me -- normally I don't give a rat's patootie about this but I saw this in a great theater when I was 15 and must have seen it a million times on cable since. But this is messing with my memory!

Thanks for the review Stefan - I haven't seen these yet but plan to buy the set this weekend while I'm doing some CD/LP shopping in the Bay Area (assuming it's on sale, of course). I've also seen these movies a million times, so I should be able to tell you if I agree that scenes have been changed/cleaned up/etc.

Bummer about lack of commentary - what is it with Spielberg, Lucas, and DVD - some type of personal vendetta? Takes forever for them to get to releasing the DVDs, then they do things like that.

The first two movies I love; RAIDERS is just a flat out classic. I've never really liked the third movie at all - painfully slow and boring IMHO, wish it was possible to just buy the first two - but getting the set will be a chance to give it (yet another) chance.

Will definitely be picking this up in the next several weeks. I would not be surprised, however, if some revision was done on TEMPLE, given George Lucas' involvement with the series. There are plenty of STAR WARS fans still furious about the "new editions" of the original trilogy, which Lucas has already announced will be the ones used for eventual DVD release.

I grabbed this Tuesday morning off the cart before they got it on the shelves (hey; I don't have to wait until the door open...it's every man for himself on release day!), but have only watched Raiders so far. I sold my video tapes close to ten years ago during my personal "economic upheaval", so it's been a long time. I don't have a home theater system, but just stereo speakers, but the sound was different. I could hear, for instance, the discussion among the students when they were leaving Indy's classroom much more clearly. I remember also seeing an added scene, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was.

Stefan, I'll try to watch Doom today as I'm off (and the heart scene will be too intense for the wife anyway; she's such a wuss with this stuff. Hates snakes, too...) and see what I see. I know this: the scene you mention needed fixing. I hope they fixed the plane crash as well...

I don't think there's anything wrong with sprucing up the effects, sound, etc. I'm more put off by story revisionism--as in the original STAR WARs, where Lucas altered the scene in which Hans Solo kills the bounty-hunter to make it appear as if the bounty-hunter fired first. It's not that big a deal, I suppose, but c'mon! I hope they didn't do that with the Indy films.

I watched Raiders last night over at a friend's house. There are a couple of extra shots I think but nothing that alters the story. The snake pit/cobra effect is cleaned up. That's all I really noticed.

Great movie! I never cared for the other two, but Raiders is a classic.
