Damn stupid, (feel free to add insults), I just fold the cantilever of my japanese cartridge!

Now I have to unmount, pack and ship it to TOKYO!!

And wait probably a couple of months for it (I don't want even think at the outrageous bill I'll have to pay).

I am such a .... (add your preferred epithet)!!!

Yikes ! :o

My sincere condolences...

Was it playing the 'Agharta' that did it?

Thanks.

No, it was laying the tonearm on Sun Ra's Strange Strings.

For some unknown reason the tonearm's lift wasn't up, so instead of putting it ABOVE the record, I move it against the record and the cantilever hitted the outer edge of the record. I guess I damaged the suspension of the cantilever. Now the stylus is totally off centered..

What bother me is that the cartridge has far less then 1000 hours, basically new!!!

Yeah, I've got cds and I could even play my mono records with the mono cartridge, but at the moment I am so angry with myself that I'd throw the whole stuff throw the window.

Look at it in the grand scheme of things. It's not like you chose Sarah Palin for your running mate.

And, yeah, have a mono LP fest!!!

Damn sorry. At least you have back up.

I left my manual table on for a couple days without having taken the needle up from the center (put a jacket on top of the dust cover so I forgot and turned the amp off...) so it just skimmed along the side of the inner groove for 50 hours plus!

Wondering if I should go and have it checked out? I can't hear any difference but who knows what damage lies within.

No idea, but the biggest problem with cartridges is that they can really ruin records. So I guess that I can easily replace a worn or damaged cartridge, or make it fixed, but I can't replace my record collection.

Good move. :)

This incident will get me being super-careful when I lift and drop the arm onto the deck. No cueing device, so it can be very 'hit and miss'.

That was the problem: I trusted the cueing lever, that for unknown reason was down. (actually the reason is probably that I didn't place the lever at the very end when I lifted the tonearm, so the weight of the cartridge moved it down.) When I had the Linn, no cueing on tonearm, therefore I was super-careful.

and don't forget that Tokyo is 15 hours ahead of us - so, given the space/time continuum, it's gonna take that much longer. Also, the dollar will be 15 hours weaker, and the head of the Tokyo tech department will be 15 hours older and possibly dead -

But wouldn't the time difference be evened-out in the return trip?

First off, my sincere condolences over this stylus issue. It's every turntable owner's nightmare. Chuck's idea isn't a bad one though. If you can bend it back carefully and you can determine that it's back in its rightful place it might be ok. Is the stylus tip still there or did it get sheared off? I don't suppose the cartridge company would ship you a "loaner" until yours is returned to you. It wouldn't hurt to ask. The worst thing they'll say is no.

My biggest issue is that is not easy to bend it back, I mean we are talking about micron precision, not millimeter, so what about if isn't perfectly center? I presume that an off centered stylus isn't friendly with records, considering that is a 2 grams tracking force. And what about suspension? A damaged one couldn't allow a correct tracking of the groove, another potential risk for records. I am really scare of it, that would be a awful nightmare.

About a loan, don't think so, maybe I'll buy a cheap MM cartridge, let's say 50/80 dollars, waiting for the baby being fixed, or just spin cds, that could be the chance to dig into RCA Ellington huge and scaring box set.
