alppila Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 Picked up the set second hand a few years back and there was no booklet. Now I'm getting frustrated! Contacted Mosaic already but they only supply 'parts' when the set is OOP, and this one is to be kept in print for the foreseeable future. Any help would be appreciated! I'll pay whatever is reasonable for it. Quote
John L Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 Well, the most essential discographic and other information is here. Quote
Niko Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 (edited) and these two texts do not substitute the 48 page booklet, but still... http://jazzinchicago.org/educates/journal/...-dean-benedetti http://jazzinchicago.org/educates/journal/...-charlie-parker btw, what really surprised me was this bit from the first article "Benedetti recorded Bird early in 1947 during a two week engagement at the Hi-De-Ho Club. In 1948, like so many other musicians, Dean (and Knepper) headed to New York and lived a desperate hand-to-mouth existence. While in New York, Dean recorded Parker on March 31, 1948, and on July 7, 10, 11, 1948. That is the extent of the archive. He did not follow Bird around the country. " Benedetti recorded Parker only on like 5 nights? (assuming that most of the Benedetti tapes are not lost) this isn't any more obsessive than most of us here... just ahead of his time i'd say... John L Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 (edited) At a minimum, it was more than five nights. Just the recordings from the Hi De Ho are from more nights than that. Most likely, there are a lot of tapes that Benedetti made that haven't surfaced for one reason or another. I think that I remember hearing somewhere that he would commonly record new Bird solos over old Bird tapes that he had already absorbed. Other tapes probably just didn't survive. On the other hand, the Ross Russell book, which did much to support the Benedetti myth, often appears to mix fact and fiction in a sensationalist kind of way. Edited October 5, 2008 by John L Quote
AllenLowe Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 do not trust ANYTHING in Rusell - the handful of musicians I knew who were in that book - Haig, Tommy Potter, Curley Russell, Howard McGhee - found it laughable in terms of accuracy - Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 FWIW, I purchased books for a couple of the Miles Davis LP sets, even though I had the CD's (and never intended to buy the LP sets). I think they were about $15 each (10 years ago). I would really push back on Mosaic further, taking it to MC himself if you have to. The economy being what it is, I would think they'd sell you a booklet for $15 or $20 if you got on the phone and personally explained your situation, and swore on a box of reels that you didn't just have burns of somebody else's set. You own a legit copy of their product, albeit an incomplete one. Convince them to let you help them complete the set. Send them photographs of your set, if you have to. They'll cave in at some point. Mark my words. Quote

"pushing back," getting Michael involved, or doing other things to make mosaic "cave in" smacks of entitlement to me, especially when we're talking about a company that has more than earned earned our respect over the years. Bluerein Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 Very well put Shrink!! My thoughts exactly!!!! Pushin back Mosaic is punished by being banned from Organissimo so be careful what you do. Big O's watching you. Quote
