skeith
from their Woodstock NY base with musicians such as Karl, Don Cherry, etc. etc. Some of these recordings could be interesting.
7/4
Sounds good to be...I'd like to hear those archives, particularly Braxton and Holland from that era. (hoo hoo!)

david weiss
Here's the link. I think I went in 1981 or 82, right out of high school..... I remember Frank Lowe, Phillip Wilson, George Lewis, Jimmy Guiffre, Leo Smith, John Zorn, Eugene Chadbourne, Gary Windo, Pauline Oliveros, Peter Kowald and Jack DeJohnette along with Karl Berger of course. I think Tom Cora was on staff. There were others of course but I can't remember everyone. Great place, old Catskills resort or hotel near Woodstock. It was a great experience. Most helpful, Jimmy Guiffre and George Lewis. Least helpful, Jack DeJohnette who insisted on keeping things way over our heads and was annoyed at our questions. Chuck Nessa
During the summer of 1978 they were kind enough to rent the facilities to me for housing/meals/rehearsal space as Roscoe and I prepared for the recording of The Maze and L-R-G. The Studio was a wonderful resource and I'll never forget it. We could not have done it without their help.

AndrewHill
It looks like Karl Berger is autioning off part of his record collection to raise money, maybe in conjunction with the project mentioned above: http://cgi.ebay.com/ALBERT-AYLER-Spiritual...A1%7C240%3A1318 And here's the CMS website: http://www.creativemusicstudio.org/

Hi Groover - I was at CMS and Banff in '79 and the early '80s. Not in a CMS-Woodstock program officially in '81 or '82 but was there frequently those years, and played some. Maybe we met? I play trumpet and flute. You still play? You were right about Tom Cora being on staff. Do you keep in contact with Karl? Right now he's looking for cassettes, posters, etc. from former participants for the Archive. Also, he'd love to know if anyone has ideas for the Archive Benefit concerts and festivals, like the one at Symphony Space. Here's his contact info: http://www.creativemusicstudio.org/contact BTW - I'm in the current Creative Music Studio Orchestra. We've been doing some of these benefit concerts. Some of the old-timers in it from the CMS days that you may know are Peter Buettner, Ted Orr and Tom Collins (staff members when you were there), Bill Ylitalo, Peter Apflebaum, Sylvain Leroux, Don Davis, Tom Schmidt, John Lindberg (he's taken over for Leo Smith temporarily at Cal Arts so I don't know if he'll be available to do other concerts), and (of course) Karl & Ingrid. Steven Bernstein sometimes plays but not recently. Others who are in the group but who weren't affiliated w/CMS are Joe McPhee, Joe Giardullo, Tani Tabal and Tomas Ulrich. Great players and a lot of fun. Take care, Bob S
