Anyone familiar with Danish bandleader Arnvid Meyers? I was not until I caught sight of this beautiful box:

First let me say how great it is to see you pop back in here, Brownie.

Arnvid was someone I knew fairly well. He played a trumpet with odd, old-fashioned valves that turned rather than plunged, if I recall correctly. We met when he was in Torben Ulrich's band at Torben's Blue Note club (in Copenhagen) and I (with Karl E. Knudsen) was among the operators of a rival venue, the Storyville Club. It was a friendly rivalry. Torben was a Danish tennis star as well as a clarinetist, so he was well connected (his son would make an entrance a few years later and found Metallica, the group).

Never heard of this box but I am delighted that it exists and I have to wonder how it eluded me since it appears to be affiliated with Jazz Special, a great, beautifully designed and informative jazz publication whose co-editor is Arnvid's son, Cim Meyer.

I have Googled in vain, cannot find mention of this particular set, price, etc. A recent issue of the magazine had an article on Arnved, who passed away not long ago, and I'll have to take another look at that—I probably missed a mention of the box set.

That looks like a nice boxed-set.

Sounds like a rotary valve trumpet. Lots of orchestral players (especially in Europe) use those, and in recent years I've seen Claudio Roditi using one.

Brownie, you're killing me. My bruised and battered bank account has just taken another hit. I can't see something like this and not have it. I'm so terribly weak. On the upside, though, it's nice to be reminded how much fun it is to navigate a website in another country, in this case, Poland. Thank God for icons, or I'd be SOL. After several stops and starts, I seem to have successfully negotiated the procurement process and I'm pleased to report that the Arnvid Meyers box will be on its way shortly. I shall report back once it arrives. Total cost including air fare was $78.00.

Interestingly enough, within mere moments of completing the transaction, I received a call from my bank asking me to verify some "unusual activity". I must say, that's comforting.

Up over and out.

As king ubu says, the Arnvid Meyer box - which I've had for about three weeks now - is available at a far better price from Jazz Messengers in Barcelona. Their email address is www.jazzmessengers.com. The box is beautifully produced by Meyer's son Cim. And the DVD is really special. The camera has really captured the interaction between the players. It's wonderful watching Benny Carter and Ben Webster digging the Danish players, especially Meyer, John Darville, Jesper Thilo, and Hugo Rasmussen. After every one of tenorman Thilo's solos Webster reaches over and gives him a friendly pat on the shoulder. I would highly recommend the set.
