Then there is the "White Christmas" version by the RAVENS which makes a nice change compared to the usual suspects' warblings ;)

And of course those Cool Yule/Hipsters Holiday compilations and the "Mr Santa's Boogie" LP on Savoy.

And finally, I admit I haven't head Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby" in a while either so it is not played out THAT much anymore for me. ;)

And there's

Gene Ammons & Tom Archia - Swingin' for Christmas - Aristocrat (Cadet)

Gene Ammons - The Christmas song (from "Night lights") - Prestige

Pharoah Sanders - The Christmas song (from "Prayer before dawn") - Theresa

And I've just ordered a copy of

Ramsey Lewis - More sounds of Christmas - Argo from Da Barstids - don't know if it'll get here by Christmas, though.

Haven't heard this one, but I'll always love the usual suspects' version.

Try Etta Jones' version on "Christmas with Houston Person and friends".

Cool Yule - w. Louis Armstrong, Big John Greer, Leo Watson, Babs, Gonzales, et al.

Nice compilation!

One that I've been playing for ages is The Stash Christmas Album: 16 Blues and Jazz Classics. It includes Louis Armstrong, Lightning Hopkins, Paul Whiteman, Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton, etc.

The Phil Spector Christmas Album is of course a classic, as is A Charlie Brown Christmas.

I've also got a James Brown Christmas album called "Santa's Got A Brand New Bag."

And thanks to this board I got the Kenny Burrell one a couple of years ago.

This thread reminded me to get the June Christy!

This record is not a Christmas disc but it does end with a gorgeous version of 'In the Bleak Midwinter' that emerges out of a mist of Impressionistic improvising:

Another vote for the John Fahey, and for the Oscar Peterson, which is surprisingly enjoyable.

Also, Marcus Roberts' "Prayer for Peace" is an unexpected pleasure. Roberts is not a favorite of mine, but he hits this solo piano holiday album out of the park.

I second Fahey and Roberts. I like this one-

Charles Brown Sings Christmas Songs (King).

(The cd issue was entitled Please Come Home For Christmas, and included four organ bonus tracks by Bill Doggett. The Charles Brown 45s mentioned by MG above are on this album. Alas, Amazon says that the cd is now out of print.)

That was me. I bought the one in the middle. I found it totally beyond my listening experience, much as if I had purchased the music of a lost tribe in a deep tropical jungle. It wasn't so much that I hated it. I just found it incomprehensible.

I thought it was you, Hot Ptah.

I know what you mean. Sometimes you hear music that has absolutely nothing you can get a grip on. Most criticism is written as if there's some ultimate hierarchy of importance/significance that we're trying to establish; yet, so often, it's the context from which you are listening that is most important. I think it's why so much jazz from Europe strikes Americans (and those who listen to mainly American music) as cold. The reference points are so different.

This is fun - five different composers turning well known Xmas songs into orchestral confectionary. All very tuneful, major key (mainly) and full of Xmas cheer (no-one is suffering for their art here!). Sounds like movie music evoking Xmas or the sorts of thing the BBC uses when advertising its Xmas season.

Another thought - most Brits would find it equally incomprehensible. The cultural context of most English people owes more to American popular music - be it Bing, Frank, Elvis, Otis or Madonna - than to anything native.
