clifford_thornton Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Hey - I was just thinking of this today. Who pressed up the UK versions of Delmark titles in the late '60s/early '70s? I have a couple of discs in US sleeves (N. Kimball address) with a two-tone blue textured label and a small deep groove around the spindle hole. On the outer area of the label it reads "Made in England" and "Unauthorised lending, copying..." but again, the jackets are paste-on domestic heavy cardboard with Chicago addresses. Chuck? Anyone? Chuck Nessa Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 It would not be a N. Kimball address - that was a Nessa address. When I worked at Delmark, Esquire was the English rep. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 My only UK Delmark is an Esquire job. But it's Esquire through and through - label as you've described it Clifford, but cover in normal British thin laminated board (which comes unglued) and bears the usual Esquire address - same as on Prestige LPs from a decade earlier. JohnS Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 (edited) I had several of these, Jarman, Mitchell and others. Looks like a US jacket but a UK pressing inside. No idea who handled these in the UK. Esquire was long gone when these came out. Edited January 21, 2009 by JohnS Quote
sidewinder Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 (edited) Based on the description of the small deep groove I wonder if this could be pressed by the UK 'Joy' label? They did do UK issues of 60s Vee-Jays such as Buddy DeFranco's 'Blues Bag' it's a possibility that they might have handled Delmark perhaps? As John says, Esquire was gone by the early 1960s and Transatlantic/Xtra were issuing Prestige/Moodsville etc. over here. Xtra would be another possibility (they have a smallish DG too) - usually white label with red 'Xtra' though. Edited January 21, 2009 by sidewinder Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 So why would my copy of "Birth sign" have the Esquire name and address on it? (I was a bit surprised back then, because I thought they'd gone to the wall, but... MG Quote
