AllenLowe Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 (edited) didn't like it at first, but now I am starting to love this lady's singing - modest but DEEP - and great trumpey by Bob Scobey, one of those white-guy-revivalists who usually annoys me - great stuff, and I searched but could find nothing on her on this site - anybody now if she's dead or alive? She has a Lee Wiley-ish modesty to her voice - Edited April 2, 2009 by AllenLowe Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 and she is a TRULY GREAT BLUES SINGER - and she made this CD in 1954 - she was born in 1918 - time to do a canvass of nursing homes - Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Just checked my diary and I haven't listened to her in 43 years. Nice cover though. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 The second cover ain't her. The first cover is a woman my mother didn't like. Quote
JSngry Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 Ok, they used a model for the second cover. Makes sense. That woman on the first cover must have been cloned for every PTA meeting I ended up seeing up until about 1967 or so... Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 2, 2009 Report Posted April 2, 2009 so she was so ugly, Contemporary put a hot chick model on the cover instead? thats not very nice.... Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 that's the record, Jim. And that explains why it looks like 2 women - because it is. On the standards, which are the first 10 cuts of the CD, it took me a little while to warm up to her - but she's got something, as I said, like Lee Wiley - very modest and personal and personable - and on the blues - wow - Quote
robviti Posted April 3, 2009 Report Posted April 3, 2009 so she was so ugly, Contemporary put a hot chick model on the cover instead? thats not very nice.... chewy the feminist? now i've seen everything! Quote
Larry Kart Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 One of the guys (Philip Parks) who comments on the album here: http://www.amazon.com/Claire-Austin-Sings-...nDateDescending says that Austin is his grandmother. Quote
WorldB3 Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 Thanks for bringing this up, I have this on my save for later list on emusic and will see if I can track it down on vinyl today at the local shop. I look forward to hearing it. Quote
JSngry Posted April 5, 2009 Report Posted April 5, 2009 That's a 36-year-old woman?! Yeah, if 80 is the new 50, then I guess 56 is the new 36. I liked quantum theory so much better when it was just theory... Quote
AllenLowe Posted April 5, 2009 Author Report Posted April 5, 2009 thanks Larry - unfortunately he doesn't have an email and is not listed on the MSN white pages - Quote
