Hoping for something next week. I was away last weekend, but watched it today on BBCi. Especially good the footage of Brubeck and Desmond (and Joe Morello recently, he seems to be doing fine), and also an interesting interview (audio only, no video) with Ornette Coleman. Good to be in England, to be honest. F Quote
sidewinder Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 (edited) Some nice footage on that 'Cool' documentary. Highlight - Getz at the LSE playing 'O Grande Amor' with Burton, Swallow and Haynes. Where the heck did they find that one, back of a broom cupboard? I always thought all of that particular late-60s series ('Jazz Goes To College'?) had been wiped. BBC - please broadcast that one in full forthwith ! Similarly the Art Farmer/Jim Hall session from 'Jazz 625' (one tune broadcast on the documentary - again, very good). The two '625s' were pretty nice. Always good to see Ed Thigpen as part of Oscar P.'s trio and the MJQ show was very enjoyable too. Milt Jackson at his very best. sidewinder Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 Hoping for something next week. Other than re-broadcasts of the Humph and Ella 'Legends' plus some shows with Oscar Peterson and Andre Preview there doesn't seem to be much extra. No more 'Jazz 625s' from what I can see, sadly, in the immediate future. Quote
sidewinder Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 Here's what's on that Getz: Jazz Goes To College Quote

sidewinder Posted April 4, 2009 Report Posted April 4, 2009 [the documentary wasn't in my view. I have to agree with that. I suspect Alan Yetnob is on something of a "KOB/Chet Baker/Brubeck' kick at the moment and the documentary was pitched with that 'style' aspect in mind. Most of us have grown out of it by now ! Bring on the Farmer/Hall. How can they just sit on this stuff? Quote

It wasn't quite clear to me what Yentob was trying to say. Presenting Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson and Kind of Blue as exponents of 1950s "Cool Jazz" is rather far-fetched, to put it mildly. On the other hand, maybe he was trying to make the point that they represented what was "cool" (i.e. ) in jazz at the time; that would have been a more credible statement. Anyway, the documentary was a mess, but, as was said above, it had some great footage. Edited April 4, 2009 by J.A.W. Quote

sidewinder Posted April 18, 2009 Report Posted April 18, 2009 (edited) Just watched the Jazz Baroness documentary. Great stuff, very moving. Yes, it was very good. I'd always thought she was extra-ordinary but from what I heard on the show she deserved a medal or three. An outstanding individual. Didn't realise that Monk was so ill in that last decade either. I remember him going low-profile and retreating to the room but the severity of the illness was kept quiet. First time I heard also that he got electric shock treatment in the late 60s in San Fran and that the doc who was on hand when he was brought in was Eddie Henderson ! The Monk 'Jazz 625' was pretty nice too - good to see that group with Rouse, Gales and Riley in action. As for future stuff - sadly there don't seem to be any more 'Jazz 625s' on the listings for next week. Edited April 18, 2009 by sidewinder Quote
