I was away last weekend, but watched it today on BBCi. Especially good the footage of Brubeck and Desmond (and Joe Morello recently, he seems to be doing fine), and also an interesting interview (audio only, no video) with Ornette Coleman.

Good to be in England, to be honest. :tup

Some nice footage on that 'Cool' documentary. Highlight - Getz at the LSE playing 'O Grande Amor' with Burton, Swallow and Haynes. Where the heck did they find that one, back of a broom cupboard? I always thought all of that particular late-60s series ('Jazz Goes To College'?) had been wiped.

BBC - please broadcast that one in full forthwith !

Similarly the Art Farmer/Jim Hall session from 'Jazz 625' (one tune broadcast on the documentary - again, very good).

The two '625s' were pretty nice. Always good to see Ed Thigpen as part of Oscar P.'s trio and the MJQ show was very enjoyable too. Milt Jackson at his very best.

Other than re-broadcasts of the Humph and Ella 'Legends' plus some shows with Oscar Peterson and Andre Preview there doesn't seem to be much extra. No more 'Jazz 625s' from what I can see, sadly, in the immediate future.

The footage on the Cool documentary was great, the documentary wasn't in my view. I'm also hoping the BBC will broadcast the Getz and Art Farmer/Jim Hall sessions in full.

[the documentary wasn't in my view.

I have to agree with that. I suspect Alan Yetnob is on something of a "KOB/Chet Baker/Brubeck' kick at the moment and the documentary was pitched with that 'style' aspect in mind. Most of us have grown out of it by now !

Bring on the Farmer/Hall. How can they just sit on this stuff?

It wasn't quite clear to me what Yentob was trying to say. Presenting Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson and Kind of Blue as exponents of 1950s "Cool Jazz" is rather far-fetched, to put it mildly. On the other hand, maybe he was trying to make the point that they represented what was "cool" (i.e.) in jazz at the time; that would have been a more credible statement. :)

Anyway, the documentary was a mess, but, as was said above, it had some great footage.

PS I didn't quite get the programme about "cool". No mention of Lester Young?

Great - thanks for the advisory. When I checked what was coming up on Freeview it didn't show this time, for some reason.

I'm looking forward to that. Roy Haynes could be heard doing some great stuff in the brief clip on the "cool" show.

From the initial view of the back of his head I thought at first it was Tony Williams - indeed, he sounded great in the clip.

Short BBC description of the Getz/Burton date:

"This concert featuring the Stan Getz Quartet was recorded at the London School of Economics and includes A Singing Song, The Sunset Dell, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, O Morro, Jive Hoot, When the World Was Young, Scrapple from the Apple and Desafinado."

Question for JohnS - were you at this concert John? I know you mentioned you were at the infamous Ayler gig that was part of this series I believw.

I would love to watch this documentary, sad no bbc 4 here in Germany. Does anybody know if it is available as an internet stream at bbc or any other chance to watch this ?

It's on the iPlayer on bbc.co.uk - not sure if it's available to non-Uk users however. Give it a try, go to the TV link on the website, then to the BBC4 schedule.

Just watched the Jazz Baroness documentary. Great stuff, very moving.

Yes, it was very good. I'd always thought she was extra-ordinary but from what I heard on the show she deserved a medal or three. An outstanding individual.

Didn't realise that Monk was so ill in that last decade either. I remember him going low-profile and retreating to the room but the severity of the illness was kept quiet. First time I heard also that he got electric shock treatment in the late 60s in San Fran and that the doc who was on hand when he was brought in was Eddie Henderson !

The Monk 'Jazz 625' was pretty nice too - good to see that group with Rouse, Gales and Riley in action.

As for future stuff - sadly there don't seem to be any more 'Jazz 625s' on the listings for next week.
