Teasing the Korean Posted May 29, 2009 Report Posted May 29, 2009 They are playing a few dates at Iridium and I'm tempted. Can anyone recommend them or dis-recommend them? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Is Miles in the band? If not, I might check out the Tommy Dorsey ghost band called Song of India. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 30, 2009 Author Report Posted May 30, 2009 Is Miles in the band? If not, I might check out the Tommy Dorsey ghost band called Song of India. They have former Miles band members and also Indian musicians playing sitar and tablas. It seems like it could go either way. I'd like to hear from someone who's seen them. They have an album; the Amazon reviews are generally good but not all are. They're playing the same night as a jazz samba group at the Zinc Bar, so who knows what I'll do. I'll probably end up at a friend's place listening to LPs and drinking red wine. Quote
7/4 Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Miles from India? I finally heard the album. After years of hearing all sorts of East-West fusion, I was kinda disappointed. Miles did it right the first time. Quote
Dave James Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Miles from India? I finally heard the album. After years of hearing all sorts of East-West fusion, I was kinda disappointed. Miles did it right the first time. Same here. I was underwhelmed. If you want to hear some good Indian based jazz, I'd suggest either Indo Jazz Fusions or Indo Jazz Suite from Joe Harriott and John Mayer. Up over and out. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 Have the album, and for me the glass was definitely half full (not half empty). I thought about 75% of it worked well, some of it very well (the Bitches Brew and early 70's tracks, especially). Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 is Bennie Maupin involved? Quote

jazzbo Posted May 30, 2009 Report Posted May 30, 2009 I've listened to it a lot and I enjoy the discs, more as I listen. I think Belden did a good job as ringmaster. TK, if you do a search there is at least one thread with a few reports of live appearances, which were I believe favorable more ofen than not. Quote

And if these albums, which I have, were being presented LIVE AT IRIDIUM I wouldn't have started the thread. Thanks for the replies. I'm sticking with samba jazz at the Zinc Bar. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted May 30, 2009 Author Report Posted May 30, 2009 It turns out Arturo O'Farrill and the Chico O'Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra are at Birdland the same night, so that's where I'll be. Thanks for the replies! Quote
PHILLYQ Posted June 1, 2009 Report Posted June 1, 2009 It turns out Arturo O'Farrill and the Chico O'Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra are at Birdland the same night, so that's where I'll be. Thanks for the replies! There's a free performance July8 by a group with Michael Henderson and Badal Roy and our own Michael Wolff: http://www.rivertorivernyc.com/events/index.php Quote
