U.S. withheld data on dangers of distracted driving

Recommended Posts

People talking on their hand sets drives me nuts, never mind texting, but though using hands free devices may be somewhat distracting I can'at belive it's as dangerous as driving while holding a cell phone. Probably the most dangerous thing I do is change cds in my player while I'm driving.

I agree texting while driving is dangerous, but banning just talking is just more bullshit from the "peace and safety" crowd. It sure is a nice money-maker for the Man in the UK, where the cops are now just tax collectors for the government.

Next, they will make it illegal to adjust the speed on the heater fan.

Atkinson woman may have been texting before fatal crash

By J.J. Huggins jhuggins@eagletribune.com

HAVERHILL — A young Atkinson woman may have been texting before a horrific highway crash with two tractor-trailers which took her life early this morning.

"We are investigating (texting) as contributing factor," said state police spokesman David Procopio.

Kelsey A. Richardson, 21, of Atkinson, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rescue personnel responded to the accident about 4:17 a.m. today on Interstate 495 north, just before Exit 51. Trooper Matthew Topping reported that a vehicle traveling northbound lost control and went off the road and struck the guardrail next to the left lane. The vehicle then spun back into the highway and hit a tractor-trailer in the right travel lane, the press release said.

This 21 year old girl went to grade school through high school with my daughter Amanda. She was observed texting while driving just before the accident by another driver.

Please talk to your kids and tell them that texting while driving can have deadly consequences.

Last week, a guy passed me going about 75 mph down the left lane of Route 495. He was staring at his iPhone. I figured he was using some sort of GPS app. As it happened, I got into the left lane behind this guy just as traffic came to a complete stop. Me being in an SUV, I was higher up than the guy so I was able to see what he was watching on his iPhone. It was a movie! Wait a minute... lots of flesh tones... lots of body parts bobbing... the guy is watching a porn movie!! I had my passenger's window down and so did the guy next to me so I yell over to him, "Hey, check it out, the guy in front of me is watching a porn movie while driving". The guy says, "No way!" and pulls forward to look into the guy's car. He drops back, shaking his head "yes" and we had a great laugh together.

The thing I don't get is that his other hand was still on the steering wheel...
