GA Russell Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 I was never a fan of Peter, Paul and Mary. Many of their songs were way too political for me, and Puff the Magic Dragon was over the top treacly. But they were much bigger stars than many of those we've honored here, so I thought I would provide the link to her LA Times obituary. http://www.latimes.com/news/la-me-mary-tra...0,1224459.story Quote
Dave James Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 Saw this in the NYT yesterday. Even though I was never much into folk, I appreciated PP&M not as much for their music as their political presence. They were early supporters of the civil rights movement and early opponents of the war...and not in a passive way. Their music was what it was, although I confess a lingering fondness for "Leaving On A Jet Plane". Also, know this. Without "Puff The Magic Dragon", we all would have been deprived of one of the best scenes in the movie, 'Meet The Parents". RIP, Mary. You were a good person. Up over and out. Quote
mikeweil Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 I once met a British couple who had two little sons named Peter and Paul. They told me their friends always made the joke that whenever they had a third child and it was a daughter, they would have to call her Mary ... Not too much of a folk fan but their songs were played on the radio over here all the time, and they were quite listenable. R.I.P. Quote
B. Goren. Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 I loved this group and it was many years before I even knew what jazz is. RIP Mary. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 it took me years to figure out that The Great Mandala did not refer to Nelson - Quote
Brad Posted September 18, 2009 Report Posted September 18, 2009 I loved them as a kid (before rock) and played the one album I had incessantly, especially "If I had a Hammer." Big part of my childhood. RIP Mary. Quote
