chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 i cant hear hank on it i dont think. where is he? Quote
Dan Gould Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 These are the only Hank sessions I've never heard. Isn't there another track on that date Hank does play on? I think I'd be pissed if I'd ever got around to this to find out that Hank only plays on the head at the end. Quote
paul secor Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 (edited) IIrc, "Sonny's Back" on Yasmina, a Black Woman, is the only time that Hank solos on a Shepp recording. Edited September 28, 2009 by paul secor Quote
BeBop Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 I just heard this - kind of accidentally - while listening to Poem for Malcolm (they're both Track One on my CD.) I hadn't noticed Hank on the lineup before listening. For me, it's Hank out-of-context. Vince Benedetti had played with Hank in one of Hank's own groups around this time, right? Seems like Moncur would be the link - playing with Shepp regularly and with the Blue Noters (on Hancock's My Point of View with Hank?), though I could have my dates all fouled up. Anyway, funny this thread would come up between my initial listen and actually being able to do a little research. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 i played it last night, on the sonnys bank hank solos and then they trade at the end and hank plays some really good bebop lines on that part and then on the other one, i didnt know WHAT was going on.... clifford_thornton Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 I wish there was more from this combo. Quote

It's surely a Philly connection from the mid-50s. Hank was well-liked for his informal teaching of young sax players there. Quote
