medjuck Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 I was browsing Freakbeat Records on Ventura Blvd while my wife looked in the lamp store next door and came across a cd entitled Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie: Complete Live at Birdland. Of the 19 tracks 10 are "bonus tracks" not from Birdland including 3 from Billy Berg's December 17, 1945 which they claim are previously unreleased. Peter Losin's Bird discography lists all 3 and says one of them is on a Philology cd but the other 2 do seem to be previously unreleased. The sound is not great but the performances are. The rest of the cd has better sound and more great music. Warning: Amazon lists a cd with this title but it seems to be a different disc. I couldn't find this one on-line but it's RLR Records 88642. Jim R Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) A label out of Spain, offering material as "previously unreleased", that isn't really previously unreleased? Absolutely shocking. I couldn't find this one on-line but it's RLR Records 88642. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sou...amp;q=RLR+88642 edit: I think I partially mis-read the comment about what was previously unreleased and what wasn't, but regardless, I tend to be skeptical in these cases until more detail comes to light. Sometimes tracks have been previously issued on scarce albums or CD's that aren't properly documented, and sometimes newly-released "unissued" tracks turn out to be erroneously labeled, so... brownie Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 You mean this one... Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Saw the CD recently and did not notice it had unissued material from this session. RLR has been good at releasing very rare material that circulated among collectors (rare Clifford Brown, Monk with Mobley, Chet Baker with Dick Twardzik, etc...) Quote
medjuck Posted November 13, 2009 Author Report Posted November 13, 2009 That's the one. Some of the other material on it isn't that readily available either. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) A complete list of all RLR releases can be found here - strangely, RLR 88642 is a number missing on the list. Edited November 13, 2009 by mikeweil Quote
bichos Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 the billy berg´s acetates are wonderful! in "52nd street theme" bird quotes "sly mongoose" ( seven years before the recording at the rockland palace ballroom!) and "tico tico". this is t h e billy berg gig that brings the new music to the west coast. the tracks are short but bird plays with such a power it blows you away. a historic recording!!! for me one of my "desert island" recordings! recorded by billy berg on two 10" presto acetates. the rest is slim gaillard and harry the hipster gibson in bad sound performing the hit of the day "cement mixer" and "harry the hipster theme" (all without bird and diz). i suppose the source of this release (on Philology Volume 62 (W 893) and complete on philology volume 73 (w 904) is one of phil schaap´s radio broadcast on wkcr. a must for all bird aficionados!!!!! keep boppin´ marcel Quote

(Fortunately it was the one I really wanted-- Bird with Dizzy's big band.) Edited November 14, 2009 by medjuck Quote
