brownie Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Trumpet player Ambrose Jackson died last month. Article from the Times-Herald Record. I met Ambrose Jackson when he was in Paris and playing with Marion Brown. A very nice man and musician who did not get the recognition he deserved. While in Paris he recorded with Marion Brown, Sunny Murray, Steve Lacy, Anthony Braxton, Alan Silva among others. Duke Ellington hired him for an European tour in the Fall of 1969. The article indicates he was a well respected man who inspired others in his community. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 Ambrose Jackson - I had to think for a while with whom I saw him play live - it was Lou Blackburn's Afro-Jazz band Mombasa. Nice trumpeter indeed. Sad to hear of his passing. R.I.P. Quote
paul secor Posted December 13, 2009 Report Posted December 13, 2009 I knew his name but was unfamiliar with his playing. I also had no idea that he lived in an area near where I live. All of which is my loss. So much goes on around us without our knowledge. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 He played on Monbasa's third LP Ode to Kalahari and wrote a nice tune for it, Mutima. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Yes, my friend Andrey interviewed him for All About Jazz while he was in hospice. Fine, fine player with Marion Brown, Gunter Hampel, Sunny Murray and Steve Lacy. Didn't get to see him with Charlie Persip. RIP - he will be missed. Quote
