Bol Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 Does anyone have an opinion on these recordings-- on their music and the recording quality? I like Newborn and Pettiford a lot, and these could be good, I thought. Quote
brownie Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 These are really jam sessions. Since it reunites musicians I love, I find them wonderful. The sound is adequate to use a word from Mark Gardner's liner notes: 'The music was captured on a non-professional but adequate tape recorder and a single mike and consequently the niceties of ideal balance are absent, but Nils Winther spent many hours of studio time enhancing the raw sound to achieve very listenable results'. So don't expect high fidelity and your ears will not be offended. Just be happy to be able to attend a jam session with these musicians! Quote
brownie Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 I should also have pointed out that the piano is out of tune. Most probably the same piano that was later transferred to the Five Spot in New York for the Eric Dolphy date with Booker Little and Mal Waldron Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 agree with the above - a fasinating glimpse at early Phineas - very out of tune instrument, though it is quite audible, as I recall. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 To be honest, these Phineas Newborn sessions disappointed me. The poor sound and out of tune piano spoiled them in my view. I would only recommend them if the person was a Phineas completist and already had all his other recordings. Quote

I have both, but I've been on a major Newborn kick for a long stretch. Haven't played these 2 cds in years. Quote
