Victor Christensen Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Can anyone supply me with the details about players and tunes from a Concert Held on June 9th 1945 In Townhall, NYC set up by Timme Rosenkrantz. It was recorded by Commodore, but I don't know if it have ever been out on a CD, any info would help because I very much would like to get hold of it. Vic Quote
Christiern Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 Good to see that you are still around, and posting, Victor. That was a great concert. Timme had the acetates in 1961, when we shared an apartment, but the only one I really recall as if I had heard it last week was the wonderful "I Got Rhythm" duo with Don Byas and Slam Stewart. Timme was rather careless with those vulnerable discs (which also included memorable recordings with Marlow Morris, made in a Brooklyn club. Didn't all those recordings go to a collection in Aarhus? This is all I could find in the NY Times. Something is wrong, unless Timme's musicians shared the Town Hall stage with a hundred singing Jewish workers. Then, again, it could have been an afternoon concert that the Times simply didn't cover. As you see, Don Byas was also present for the Gillespie concert a couple of weeks later. BTW, Victor, have you visited my blog? It has stuff about Timme that might interest you. http://stomp-off.blogspot.com Quote

Victor Christensen Posted February 21, 2010 Author Report Posted February 21, 2010 Thanks Guys for the info, would really love to get my hands on it, especially the Don Byas ones Vic Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 The Byas material was coupled with Ben Webster/Sid Catlett titles on an early Commodore cd shown HERE. Quote
Ken Dryden Posted February 21, 2010 Report Posted February 21, 2010 I don't believe that the complete Town Hall concert of June 9, 1945 has been reissued on CD, though it was included in the third volume of The Complete Commodore Recordings (a 20 LP limited edition boxed set), which has been oop for years. I remember finding the 1970s 2 LP set of it as a cutout for the price of $2.47 plus tax. It's great music that's worth acquiring. Quote
brownie Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 Some portions of the concert were released on Chronological Classics. Tunes by the Red Norvo ensemble appeared on the Red Norvo 1945-1947 Classics 1386. Tunes by the Stuff Smith trio appeared on the Stuff Smith 1944-1946 Classics 1081. Quote
Don Brown Posted February 22, 2010 Report Posted February 22, 2010 I put all the music from the double LP release that Ken Dryden mentions (on Atlantic) on two CDRs. Wonderful music. Quote
Victor Christensen Posted February 23, 2010 Author Report Posted February 23, 2010 The Byas material was coupled with Ben Webster/Sid Catlett titles on an early Commodore cd shown HERE. Thanks Chuck for the info, have just ordered on from Amazon. It was a shame that Uptown never reissued the two Dameronia LP's on CD, I really wanted to get them. Vic Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 23, 2010 Report Posted February 23, 2010 The second Dameronia is out now with some added material. Quote
