Hard to decide which is best; since they played tunes from the Great American Songbook I would probably recommend choosing based on the one with the highest proportion of songs you especially enjoy.

Correct - I like (almost) all of the Venus CDs.

I too have been a fan of Eddie Higgins for along long time.

His trio session on Arbors and his many Venus albums with Scott Hamilton are all , in my view, terrific.

I only saw/heard Eddie Higgins live once. It was at a record collectors event in San Antonio, Texas.

If I were to go for these, would that be a good choice?

Time on My Hands (Arbors)

Speaking of Jobim (Sunnyside)

A Handful Of Stars (Venus) - A Hamilton / Peplowski one

Bewitched (Venus) - A trio one

Or would you substitute any of these?

Sorry to be asking for specific recommendations, but I want a nice drink, rather than a pub crawl.

I think it's a bit more than a drink unless you are the type to nurse a beer for four hours ;)

but I think these are fine selections.  The only one I don't have is the last, and a lot of people really like the Jobim one.

I don't have "Time On My Hands" but the others are all very good, especially the Jobim tribute. "When Your Lover Has Gone" (titled "Zoot's Hymns" on Sunnyside) is also worth hearing.

I have to say that I really hate the cover of "A Handful Of Stars". Unlike a lot of Venus' cheesecake cover shots, this is one of Irina Ionesco's photos of her very young daughter Eva. Venus's use of semi-nude women, even if they are considered "art", is weird enough. Using a photo of a partially-nude underage girl is not weird - it's just wrong.

If I were to recommend just one to hear Eddie Higgins, it would be "Time On My Hands" (Arbor).

Thanks!

I generally don't mind Venus' covers, but the two quartet dates are, not just porny, and awkward, but also ugly.

Feel free to point me elsewhere.

A Handful of Stars exists without the objectionable cover.

I have the album Soulero on Atlantic.  I don't think I know anything else by this guy, unless he is sideman on something and I either forgot or didn't know to begin with.

Eddie Higgins' "When Your Lover Has Gone", while not being one of the worst Venus covers, is available on Sunnyside as "Zoot's Hymns" with a very different cover.

Primary

I think the cover shot of Eva used on Higgins' "It's Magic" was a terrible choice by Venus. I don't know what they were thinking when they decided to use that photo.

FWIW, Eva sued her (now late) mother to gain control over the negatives of all of these photos, so I doubt we'll ever be subjected to more of them in the future.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.

I've listened to some of them above. Quite a different pianist to the earlier style. Far less hard bop and far more swing and stride in his later style. Some very good stuff, if not quite such a jolt as the older self-titled record that made me first pay notice

I've been quite interested in the Scott Hamilton ones. I don't like Hamilton very much as a rule, but he has a harder edge on Handful of Stars than I had expected, and plays some unexpected stuff in his solos.

Zoot's Hymns has a tenor player on it called John Doughten. A completely new name to me. Seems to have released only a single leader record. Does he have much of a presence?

When I played a week at Bubba's in Fort Lauderdale with Jon Hendricks back in 1982, Eddie was in residence there and played solo piano in between our sets, any song in any key, wherever his fingers landed at the moment. It was great to hear him every night. Beautiful guy.
