Guest Wallace Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Just watched this film. Whatya think? Quote
AllenLowe Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 good idea, bad movie. I gave up after about 40 minutes. Quote
Guest Wallace Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 good idea, bad movie. I gave up after about 40 minutes. Really? Why so? I was going to say that I suppose you say so because you did not chime to the fact that the two (of the three) pivotal/climax points of the movie were given over to PROG music (specifically "Whiter Shade Of Pale" - when it was announced they were going off the air due to govt pressure - and "Nights In White Satin" - last song played on air as the boat was sinking.) I WAS going to say this, but, as you stated, you only watched the first 40 minutes. Quote
Guest Wallace Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Okay - suckitude keeps them from calling the movie Radio Caroline, but the Marine Offences Act which was used in an attempt to shut down Caroline in 1966 WAS mentioned in the movie. So then if its '66 how come they are playing Procul Harum "Whiter Shade" (single released in May '67) ,Moody Blues "White Satin" (single released Nov '67)?? Also in the movie, the SINGLE LP (momentarily) rescued from North Sea oblivion was Incredible Stringband "5000 Spirits..." (released in July 67). Also, one of the lp covers I spotted was Dylan "Highway Wotsit Revisited". Correct me if Im wrong, but this surely was NOT released in '66. WTF? Somewhere (in a scene unshown in this movie, the boat must have went thru a time-shifterie blackhole or perhaps collided with Dr Who's Tardis. OR... guy responsible for this movie LOVES PROG and had to do a little historical fudging so as to allow certain prog into the movie score. (Nothing the matter with that. Good taste license, I calls it.) Right-o? Quote
JSngry Posted July 10, 2010 Report Posted July 10, 2010 Also, one of the lp covers I spotted was Dylan "Highway Wotsit Revisited". Correct me if Im wrong, but this surely was NOT released in '66. You're right. It was released in 1965. Quote
mr jazz Posted July 10, 2010 Report Posted July 10, 2010 enjoyable but I hoped everyone watched the extras-we both thought they could have made a much better film if some of those scenes had been used instead. One of them is eye popping in an adult way! Quote
RDK Posted July 10, 2010 Report Posted July 10, 2010 I enjoyed it. By all accounts the U.S. edit is much better than the UK version. Quote
Guest Wallace Posted July 11, 2010 Report Posted July 11, 2010 Yes, there was LOTS cut out . And - with the exception of the silly "Help"-like bit with them dancing on the streets - all were superior scenes. Seems they cut out the most humorous material. Censored alla 1966. Quote
RDK Posted July 12, 2010 Report Posted July 12, 2010 Yes, there was LOTS cut out . And - with the exception of the silly "Help"-like bit with them dancing on the streets - all were superior scenes. Seems they cut out the most humorous material. Censored alla 1966. It isn't a matter of "censorship" at all. The original film ("The Boat that Rocked") bombed in the UK and was recut/trimmed for release in the U.S. and Canada. Many people seem to prefer the recut version (it was 20 minutes shorter and less meandering). Quote
Guest Wallace Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Whose to say meandering cannot equate to goodness? I like things meandering. (Most dont have a hang-up over rivers meandering, do they?) Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 The army corps of engineers had a thing about it, rivers meandering that is. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Most people don't try to watch a river from beginning to end, either. Quote
Guest Wallace Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Now we are getting to the real important bit: Who is desirous of Wallace listing some PROG songs specific to the topic of river? Quote
