bebopbob Posted December 21, 2003 Report Posted December 21, 2003 Have any of the Original Jazz Classics or OJC Limited Edition CDs gone out of print? Are any titles in danger of being deleted anytime soon? Quote
Philip Posted December 21, 2003 Report Posted December 21, 2003 Elmo Hope's Final Sessions (OJCCD 1765 & 1766) were leased and are now OOP. They have resurfaced though, on Evidence as a 2CD set. I found the Japanese editions (cheaply) a year or so ago, and if you are keen on original artwork they may still be around. Incidentally, the tracks are not cut on the CD editions, as they were for the LPs. Quote
Brad Posted December 21, 2003 Report Posted December 21, 2003 As a general rule, the answer is no. However, I suggest you check the Fantasy Web Site which lists all that's available. You can now order those online from them and I believe you order so many they give you free shipping and a discount (at least they used to have that). Just because they call something "limited", it's not really. Quote
Jim R Posted December 21, 2003 Report Posted December 21, 2003 I hadn't thought about this for awhile, but I seem to recall a discussion on the BN board about OOP OJC's. I thought there were a few that had been deleted, but I can't recall any details now. I agree though, I think a general answer is "no". Coincidentally, I was just thinking about the fact that they DO delete some titles from their regular (non-OJC) catalog. Somebody had asked at AAJ for guitar trio recommendations, and one artist I recommended was Joshua Breakstone. It then dawned on me that Fantasy has deleted ALL of his four releases on the Contemporary label (they dated back to the 1987-1990 period). Those are wonderful albums (3 of the 4 were issued on CD), featuring greats like Pepper Adams, Jimmy Knepper and Tommy Flanagan, and I was very disappointed to realize that they're no longer available. mikeweil Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 Sometimes they run out of stock. Your observations about deleted titles from the non-OJC-catalogue is correct; some day they turn up in the OJC series, If we're lucky. Quote

If I'm not mistaken, all Breakstone recordings are vanity deals - paid for (and owned) by the artist. Quote
Jim R Posted December 22, 2003 Report Posted December 22, 2003 Interesting... I guess I never associated that approach as much with bigger name labels like Contemporary. But, my knowledge of the business side of music is probably somewhere between 0 and .01 Quote
