JSngry Posted October 19, 2010 Report Posted October 19, 2010 None. Do I win? It's an honest answer! Quote
Bright Moments Posted October 19, 2010 Author Report Posted October 19, 2010 (edited) None. Do I win? It's an honest answer! Yes Jim you win. I was astonished to read this tidbit in Whitney Balliett's book. The great Art Tatum never wrote a song. Edited October 19, 2010 by Bright Moments Quote
paul secor Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 I'm not a big Tatum fan, so I don't have many recordings to look through, but "Toledo Blues" on God Is in the House is credited to Tatum. Maybe blues tunes don't count as songs. Quote

Maybe blues tunes don't count as songs. Does that tune have a head? Nevertheless, the question was how many Tatum compositions can you name... even if he had written 20 or 30, I couldn't name any, so....ignorance wins again! Quote
bichos Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 what about "battery bounce" with joe thomas, edmond hall, john collins, billy taylor and eddie dougherty from january 21, 1941? and what about "art´s blues" from "the fabulous dorseys" film soundtrack 1946. both are credited to tatum on my reissued disc. "trio blues" doesen´t count? it´s from january 27, 1956 from the tatum group masterpieces? keep boppin´ marcel Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 How many Art Tatum compositions can you name? Supplementary question (top challenge the gifted and talented): How many notes did he play in his life. Quote
bichos Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 just found some more in my records collection: on the "black lion" label: from 1944: 52nd street blues; midnight melody; gang o´notes; just before dawn; between midnight and dawn and apollo boogie. all credited to tatum. but strangely the bruyninckx discography states the tracks "52nd street blues; just before dawn and midnight melody as played by frank paparelli!! from the liner notes by alun morgan: "the first side of the lp is devoted to tatum originals,...tatum, like a number of other great solists including stan getz, put his name to remarkably few compositions,...for this reason alone the first six titles would be of interest but in addition a number of the tunes are based on the twelve-bar blues format..." keep boppin´ marcel Quote

BruceH Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 I couldn't name a single one either. Quote

AllenLowe Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 Toledo Blues may, IIRC, have lyrics; there's a song he sings on that Jerry Newman session. Quote
Spontooneous Posted October 22, 2010 Report Posted October 22, 2010 Toledo Blues may, IIRC, have lyrics; there's a song he sings on that Jerry Newman session. Am I alone in finding the blues that Tatum sings with the somebody-buy-me-a-drink lyrics indescribably sad? Quote

cih Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Doesn't look like Ida Cox to me - though the confusion is common, Document Records have the above photo on a Josie Miles CD, and an artist's impression of it on an Ida Cox collection! (Talking of Chris A and Ida, this story has a great ending) Quote
