romualdo Posted November 30, 2010 Report Posted November 30, 2010 I'm currently reading Robin Kelley's heartwrenching & erudite work on Thelonious. I was intrigued to see that he wrote & recorded (over 3 nights in July 59) part of the music score for the French movie "Les Liaisons Dangereuses". The majority of the titles are reworkings of his earlier material. I Thought it was only Art Blakey that recorded for this (has been released on vinyl & CD). Has the Monk material ever had a CD release? I've not seen the movie (yet!!) Quote
brownie Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 An earlier thread on the film music. Unfortunately, Marcel Romano passed away in 2007. The Monk music has yet to be released. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 Wow - I didn't know that. Seems I should try and find a copy of the movie ... Quote

Saw the film in Paris on its release in 1959. Perhaps you did too, Brownie? Still the remember the haunting melody of "Pannonica" in the film. Quote

Still the remember the haunting melody of "Pannonica" in the film. Yes, saw it as soon as it came out and, even if I did not expect much, was pretty disappointed by the film. But not by the music! Still catching the film when it is being shown on the TV film channels here, mainly to enjoy the Monk music! And also to watch Gérard Philipe and Jeanne Moreau. Also the film is a rare opportunity to enjoy Boris Vian's nonchalant acting! Quote

brownie Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 (edited) Trailers for 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses 1960'... Trailer 1 Trailer 2 Some Monk (with Charlie Rouse) can be heard in the background on both trailers. Kenny Dorham and Kenny Clarke can be seen briefly in the party scene in the first trailer (it's Lee Morgan and Art Blakey actually playing!). It's Boris Vian playing opposite Jeanne Moreau in the second trailer. Edited December 1, 2010 by brownie Quote
mikeweil Posted December 1, 2010 Report Posted December 1, 2010 The DVD currently available is French only, without any subtitles in other languages .... ... and it's rather expensive. Quote
Bluesnik Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 I've not seen the movie (yet!!) not the stephen frears version (from somewhere around the turn of the 80s to the 90s) with john malkovich, glenn close and michelle pfeiffer? Quote
