Randy Twizzle Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 He wrote the first book about jazz that I ever read since it was the Only book about jazz that my high school library owned. I took it(or hid it in my coat) from the library and kept it for dozens of years. I never knew much about him until recently when I've had too many hours to search through the net and found this from the Barnard NewsMy link Quote
mjzee Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 A fascinating life. Thanks for posting. Quote
JSngry Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 Is his Ellington biography still in print? Quote
BillF Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 He was the inspiration for one of my favorite jazz titles, Lennie Tristano's "Coolin' Off With Ulanov". Quote
brownie Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 The lineup of Barry Ulanov's All Star Modern Jazz Musicians for the WOR radio station broadcasts in 1947 was not bad Dizzy Gillespie, John LaPorta, Charlie Parker, Lennie Tristano, Billy Bauer, Ray Brown and Max Roach! Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 Randy.....we've been looking for you and that book. Because of you a third-grade bebop fan cried himself to sleep. Quote
Bill Nelson Posted December 27, 2010 Report Posted December 27, 2010 The 3rd grader can get over it. However, there's a remaining matter of settling an unpaid 'user fee'. Calculating your decades of library fines, plus interest compounded annually, allows the local Tax Commissioner to apply a lien on your property. If you don't own a home, then your car may suffice. If you don't own a car, then your record collection will do. Barry Ulanov would thank you, if he could. Quote
