I just discovered the Louvin Brothers in the last month or so and I'm very glad I did, they did some excellent work and are well deserving of their place in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. There aren't a whole lot of artists left from the old school.

Agreed. The Razor & Tie compilation is well worth having if you don't want to spring for the box (which I eventually picked up).

Sad news. The Louvin Brothers Bear Family box is wonderful.

I'd recommend grabbing one of these:

The Louvin Brothers - Classic Album Collection

2008 three CD set containing three classic albums from the Country legends, each containing four bonus tracks: The Louvin Brothers (1957), Tragic Songs Of Life (1956) and Nearer My God To Thee (1957). 48 tracks. There are a couple of marketplace sellers selling new copies for less than $10.00.

The Louvin Brothers box is among the greatest projects that Bear Family has given us. I had managed to acquire most of the LP's by the time it came out, but I sprang for it anyway. If there is a single box to which I return more often than any other, it's this one, and that includes most of the Mosaics as well. Many "complete" boxes invariably contain a certain amount of filler or weaker material, but not this one. The brothers were consistently good!

in the late 70s through the mid 80, charlie appeared weekly on the the grand old opry. his

songs were tasteful, measured, reflective, masterfully delivered, and never trite. the mature charlie louvin was one of my most favorite country artists of the period.

I remember discovering the Louvins by way of the Rounder Records lp reissues back in the 1970s. "When I Stop Dreaming" is one of the greatest recordings ever in country music.

Amen. Back in the late 70s/early 80s, before CDs, one of the tapes I made for the car had "When I Stop Dreaming" from a Rounder LP on it. Love that record.

R.I.P., Mr. Louvin.
