RDK
For what it's worth... http://www.npr.org/2011/02/07/133479768/the-mix-the-jazz-100 Pretty "conservative" list overall, but due, I think, to how it was compiled. When you're asked to pick a top 3 or 5 best/favorite jazz tracks it's hard not to fall back on some Miles or Bird or Brubeck and the like. Personally I think a Top 200-500 would be more diverse and interesting.
Guest Bill Barton
pretty good list all-in-all when you figure the focus... pleasant surprise seeing "ceora" on there!
Dmitry
Surprisingly, the list is clearly not 'racially-balanced'. The breakdown of the top 100 NPR-approved 'jazz songs' should be - White persons 79.6% Black persons 12.9% American Indian and Alaska Native persons 1.0% Asian persons 4.6% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander 0.2% Persons reporting two or more races 1.7% Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin 15.8% The guy from Saturn 0.01%

Ken Dryden
This list was compiled from submissions by NPR listeners. One expecting anything aside from the best known tracks will be disappointed. Although some of the artists might have made my top ten, it wouldn't be for their greatest hit or hits. There's no way would that the monotonous song "Birdland" reach my top 1000, or 10,000, for that matter. It's a joke, NPR is so politically correct it's painful to listen to.
