Chuck Nessa Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 (edited) The first thing I searched for is incorrect/incomplete! I search because it involved my work. In the 1978 Critics Poll there was a 5 way tie for Album of the Year - they were listed alphabetically: Akiyoshi/Tabackin Insights Ornette Coleman Dancing In Your Head Dexter Gordon Homecoming Dexter Gordon Sophisticated Giant Roscoe Mitchell Nonaah The website only shows Insights. I was really proud to do this well against the promo departments of RCA, Columbia and A&M. edit to add: I emailed this post to Frank Alkyer (publisher), and he responded "On the Critics Poll, I just looked that up and ... YIKES! Someone was working too fast. We'll fix it! Edited June 23, 2011 by Chuck Nessa Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 23, 2011 Report Posted June 23, 2011 I should add, I was always interested in who came in later - the magazine usually listed the first ten. That year in the "Label of the Year" category my little operation came in 8th. Quote
brownie Posted June 24, 2011 Author Report Posted June 24, 2011 Surprised that among the rather conventional results of the early Readers' Poll there is Chu Berry being crowned in 1937! No mention of Coleman Hawkins. And first mention of Louis Armstrong in 1952 (Hall of Fame) only! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted June 24, 2011 Report Posted June 24, 2011 Hawk was in Europe then. Out of sight, out of mind. Quote
brownie Posted June 24, 2011 Author Report Posted June 24, 2011 Hawk was back in the USA in the 40s, 50s, and so on... Not a single mention. The tenor laurels in the 40s went to people like Tex Beneke, Eddie Miller, Vido Musso and one Lester Young! Quote
GA Russell Posted July 10, 2011 Report Posted July 10, 2011 Thanks brownie! I've wanted to see this for years! Quote

With the exception of the Ornette album, the others are not in the same league. Time has a way of sorting things out. Quote
