An SX-780! That's the model I had when I was a kid. Those old Pioneers are great receivers. I have a similar model now.

my favorite turntable is a 50 year old dual 1015 with a 7 pound platter.

An SX-780! That's the model I had when I was a kid. Those old Pioneers are great receivers. I have a similar model now.

the tuner is much better than the 1990 pioneer vsx 3800 that i've used daily since 1991.

Wow. That 780 model was the one I bought - in late 1978 !! In fact my parents are still running the thing, it looks 'near new' and still sounds fine (the FM tuner is no slouch). Certainly a bargain when you consider how it has been used. And the lights are still all working !

I ran it with a Dual direct-drive turntable, Mission speakers and a JVC cassette deck. It was the 'dogs bollox' at the time. A 'massive' 35 watts into 4 ohms, if I remember right..

The only thing I still use from that set-up is the Zerostat (although still have the speakers) !

speaking of power, tuner sensitivity, and fantasizing----------------

fisher, at that time, was one of the guiltier players.

i drooled more than my share; now that drool dust is in the cutout bin of a thrift store.

the phono input, indeed, and it sonically blows away the phono inputs/outputs of 25 year younger pioneer models.

there is a dimension and presence to the vinyls my panasonic vsx 9800 has been lacking.

it's like i'm hearing many recordings for the first time.

that's the best part of this receiver.
