I wonder if anyone has seen this. I saw it last night and it's positively brilliant. It's based on the Invention of Hugo Cabret and is Scorsese's homage to the world of early film making, specifically Georges Méliès. Here's a review from New York Times. Here's also a link to the book by Brian Selznick for those who may be interested, Hugo Cabret.

There are lots of youtube videos containing Méliès', particularly A Trip to the Moon, which is a central part of the movie.

I'm sure that those who more familiar with Mr. Méliès will have a lot more to say on this thread.

Yes! It's a wonderful film. I saw this at an industry screening a few weeks ago, with Scorsese speaking about it afterwards. It's far more than the "boy and his robot" that the trailer suggests. And the 3D is really great as well.

I envy you. I would have loved to hear what he had to say. Do you recall the essence of his remarks?

A brilliant movie. Joe, I'm not particularly interested in the history of film, but I thought this was excellent film-making.

I loved this movie too. Much better than the overrated "Artist".
