ghost of miles Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I'm supposed to get a copy next week... this one's been in the can for a long time. The set-list looks to be mostly standards, with "Mother Nature's Son" thrown in as well. Quote
Free For All Posted January 29, 2004 Report Posted January 29, 2004 I just picked this one up and have been enjoying it quite a bit. Nice interplay, some unique variations/interpretations on standards. I'm a fan of both Frahm and Mehldau though- each posesses a fairly extensive vocabulary (musically and otherwise). Doesn't Frahm post over at AAJ sometimes? Anyway, I give it a Quote
Aggie87 Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 I just picked this one up as well, and give it a solid thumbs up as well. I was in Austin this weekend, and went out on Friday night to see Jane Monheit at the Paramount (nice place - my first time in there!). She's got some nice pipes. This is the second time I've seen her in the past year (caught her last year with Stacy Kent and Cassandra Wilson in Stuttgart). Joel Frahm is still playing sax with her, and was the best musician on the stage, IMO. I got to talk to him a little after the show, and he was very friendly. He seemed very proud of this album, though he mentioned he thought it was less "edgy" than "The Navigator". We talked about how long he and Mehldau have known each other (they went to high school together), and how fun it was recording together after all these years. They were off to Tennessee today, and then back to Louisiana, before heading back to NYC to continue recording Monheit's next record, I believe. Anyway, check this disc out if you get a chance! -Erik Quote
Tom in RI Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 Thanks for posting this, I wasn't aware of a new release from him. Another release on Palmetto, The Other Side of Ellington, has some nice moments from Frahm, and its bargain priced to boot. Quote
king ubu Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I heard Frahm on a broadcast with Monheit. They did a really FAAAST "Lover, Come Back To Me", and he played a solo as close to perfection as one might get! I was really impressed! ubu Quote
Alexander Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I picked this one up a couple of weeks ago. Very nice. Mehldau can be a little cerebral at times, but here he's in marvellous form. I hadn't heard Frahm before, and I was certainly impressed. Great interplay between the two musicians. Two thumbs way up from me. Quote
