Hardbopjazz Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 (edited) I know the musicians are Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Hot Lips Page and Lenny Trisano, but who is the other trumpet player? I can't see who is on drums and bass so I 'm trying to figure them out from this photo. Edited December 27, 2012 by Hardbopjazz Quote

marcello Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 (edited) Birdland, on opening night on December 15,1949. From the left, Max Kaminsky on trumpet, Lester Young on tenor saxophone, a nearly-hidden George Wettling on drums, Hot Lips Page on trumpet, Charlie Parker on alto saxophone, Lennie Tristano on piano. Ted O'Reilly Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 Wow! 98 cents, tax included. (And whatever happened to That Great Young Vocalist Harry Belafonte?) Quote
Gheorghe Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 I know that photo from Francis Paudras´ book "To Bird with Love". Really, some broadcast of Bird together with Max Kaminsky from around that time exists. Quote
Indestructible! Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 Was any of this recorded? If so, is it circulating out there? Quote
brownie Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 Maybe researchers at the Voice of America (VOA has a small banner on fhe left side of the bandstand) will one day discover there are traces of that evening in their archives but so far none has surfaced Quote
Gheorghe Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 The Bird-Kaminsky encounter I got on record, is from March 4 1949 CBS Adventures in Jazz, TV broadcast, NY 1949, the other trumpet player is Miles, Others involved on those 4 tracks are Kai Winding, Max Roach, Ann Baker ( voc on "I got a kick out of you) etc ..... BillF Posted December 27, 2012 Report Posted December 27, 2012 Bird and Max Kaminsky, eh? Another across-the-styles meeting was when Bird recorded with a Metronome All Stars that included baritonist Ernie Caceres, more usually associated with Bobby Hackett or Jack Teagarden. Here's the back story: http://www.jazzwax.com/2009/01/metronome-allstars-mystery-solved.html Quote
