rockefeller center Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 Zweitausendeins.de has this 9 CD set for $57 (45 Euro). Has anyone of you seen it even less expensive? Any comments on this set? Thanks. Quote
JSngry Posted February 1, 2004 Report Posted February 1, 2004 Can't comment on the price, but the music is mostly golden. Quote
Brandon Burke Posted February 2, 2004 Report Posted February 2, 2004 (edited) The first volume (the black one) was the first box set I ever owned. It's brilliant.....obviously. The second (the blue one) is also great. By the time you get to the third, things had changed a bit. This is not to slight the quality of the tunes but if you're expecting what most folks understand to be the "Stax sound" you might be disapointed. Vol. 3 does have a great version of 'Starting All Over Again", though. Wait a minute......you only asked about Vol. 2. Yeah, it's great and that seems like a good price. I mean, hell, there's what nice CDs in there......? When I bought Vol. 1 new, however many years ago, I think it was just under $100. Can't speak to the current used market value. Do a "completed items" search on eBay and see what it goes for on there. Edited February 2, 2004 by Brandon Burke Quote

I'd have it by the end of the night. It's not out of print. However, it has been repackaged in a smaller slip case and the book shunk down to the size of a jewel box. Essential stuff. Quote

PHILLYQ Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 SS1, You're in for hours and hours of good tunes- I have the box, and as Jim S. said, the music on there is golden. You got a great deal for that price. Enjoy it! Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 Vol. 3 does have a great version of 'Starting All Over Again", though. ← Is that the one by Johnny Taylor? I have the 3-disc retrospective of his put out by Fantasy. GREAT music there. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 any fav songs off the first set? i've got disc # 3 going every song is good ss1 Quote
.:.impossible Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 This has to be in contention for the best blog on the internet right now. Quote
chuckyd4 Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 That's really bizarre - I just picked up this set recently. I don't think there's a bad moment on it. Quote
kinuta Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 I bought Volume one ( the black box) when it was first released and it has had a lot of play. I never got round to buying Volume 2 ( the blue box) which I sometimes regret. If ever you see a copy of the Sue Records Story box set it makes a great companion to the Stax. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 fwiw this set has 244 cuts on it i've made it through the entire set the last cd has some samples that were used by chubb rock and the chappelle show this stuff is essential in my books Quote
chuckyd4 Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 this stuff is essential in my books ← Quote
Alexander Posted June 26, 2005 Report Posted June 26, 2005 I agree that this stuff is essential, but I wasn't crazy about the box set itself. When I listen to Otis, Sam and Dave, or Booker T. and the MGs, I tend to like to listen to them all at once. I didn't like having their songs spread out throughout the set. I got rid of it, and replaced it with individual discs by my favorite artists (Johnny Taylor, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas, etc.). I don't really regret getting rid of it. It was a case of TOO MUCH of a good thing. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 any favorite otis redding songs?? Quote
wolff Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 any favorite otis redding songs?? ← My favorite may be Amen(found it on an Atlantic Best Of Soul LP). I have no idea which album it's on and I think I own them all. Next, would be Down In The Valley off of Otis Blue. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted June 28, 2005 Report Posted June 28, 2005 i believe Amen is off of The Immortal Otis Redding LP June 20, 1969 Quote
