Mark Stryker
Can anyone shed some light on the life and career of pianist Billy Greene? Was listening to Elvin Jones/Richard Davis' "Heavy Sounds" (Impluse) last night and was struck by Greene's tune "M.E.," which has a strong Freddie Redd flavor. You can get a taste of the tune here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001NZU3U8/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk3
mikeweil
That's his only recording, if the Lord disco is correct. Was it a pseudonym? Don't have that CD anymore, and can't remember about the liner notes giving info on him ...
marcello
In Whitney Balliett's profile of Elvin Jones, Elvin tell that his pianist Billy Greene first told him about Coltrane's death, so I would say he was/is a real person. Mark Stryker
Thanks for checking Lord and the Balliett reference. Still, odd that there seems to be nothing else floating around about him. Edited February 23, 2013 by Mark Stryker

Is that all previously unreleased? Looked at the Japanese site - apparently it is. Edited September 9, 2022 by jlhoots
Jaymo2000
This new Blue Note was recorded Live at Pookies. There’s a ton of information out now on this release, but sadly not much on Billy Greene.
