Alexander Hawkins Posted April 13, 2003 Report Posted April 13, 2003 Just listening to 'Drives' earlier. I have to admit that after seeing him live on several occasions, and thinking that he was simply the best thing EVER AT ALL NO QUESTIONS ASKED, I've been slightly confused by a lot of his stuff on record. I'm not 'disappointed' by it, because listening to it, I can imagine seeing him playing it...If you've seen him, you'll know what I mean. But I can't help but feel, if I put on a CD like Drives without having seen him, I would find a lot of the stuff totally WEIRD! I do find there are exceptions. He absolutely burns on Marmaduke and Confirmation on the Lou Donaldson 'Relaxin' at Sea' (Chiaroscuro), for instance. I wondered what everyone thought about the 'Turbanator' (that nickname has to make you cringe...) Quote
alankin Posted April 18, 2003 Report Posted April 18, 2003 (edited) I wondered what everyone thought about the 'Turbanator' (that nickname has to make you cringe...) I liked "The Turbanator." Here's a link to review I wrote: home.att.net/~lankina/jazz/Reviews/R0009i.html Dr. Lonnie also has an new album coming out the end of next month that's an album of Beck covers, called "Boogaloo to Beck"! mikeweil Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Has anybody heard and can recommend this one? Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 I have that disc. Nice stuff. I reccomend it. Lonnie plays very well with that trio. They also did those two tribute discs to Hendrix which are worth picking up too, but I like Afro Blue even better. Quote
Soul Stream Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Lonnie NEEDS to put out a double CD of a live trio show. Period. THAT would spread the word as to his greatness. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 No shit. They recorded that show I saw in Ann Arbor last fall. It would be nice if they released it on Schoolkids records. He KILLED it. And Perry Hughes and Randy Gelispie were right there with him. Quote
Clunky Posted November 13, 2003 Report Posted November 13, 2003 Hasn't he got new one due out on Palmetto? Quote
