Anybody know where in KC it was recorded?  That's where I grew up.....

It's a reference to "Max's Kansas City," I believe. You know, the arty-beat-wannabee hangout of the '50s in Greenwich Village.

The liner notes - by Leonard Feather - indicate the title is in reference to a two-week engagement by the Russell sextet at a club called the Blue Room in Kansas City. The lolal musicians visited the place during Russell's gig including Fats Dennis, John Jackson (the other alto player in McShann's big band when Bird played) and Eddie Vinson.

An aside. George Russell says 'our recording of Tune Up, one of Eddie's great compositions, is dedicated to him.'

'Tune Up' is credited on the album to Miles Davis, as usual.

It did come out on CD recently, but on Jazz Collectors, one of the Andorran labels, so the sound may be so-so.

I bought a copy of this in Spain a few months ago. Sounds fine to me.
