The original Gojira/Godzilla

Amazon has the Criterion Godzilla/Gojira on sale.

I've never seen it. Does anyone recommend it? Is the movie any good, or is its praise more a political statement regarding the use of nuclear weapons?

I remember it as being fantastic, but it's a forty-five year old memory, so I wouldn't go by that...

The original version completely changes the tone and feel of the movie. It's a tragic, post nuclear horror story, and very serious. The later Raymond Burr tacked sequences just seem stupid by comparison.

Yeah, all I remember is that whenever Raymond Burr came on, it seemed like we were going into basic drive-in fare. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but...and I like Raymond Burr, the man whose name and speaking voice both sound the same.

I've always wanted to see the original, without the American inserts. Something else on the to-do list.

The original Japanese version is a must-see film, serious and scary (and the effects have a quaint charm of their own). Highly recommended.
