clifford_thornton Posted January 8, 2015 Report Posted January 8, 2015 I bet. Interviewed him years ago for AAJ and the experience was a trip. Fascinating character. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 Met him in Chicago in 1966 and am still irritated. Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 How did he irritate you? Quote
paul secor Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 My one encounter with him (late 90's) was strange and somewhat annoying. I've read since that social skills aren't his forte. I can attest to that. Quote
Gheorghe Posted January 9, 2015 Report Posted January 9, 2015 think I saw him once during the early 80s with some austrian free jazz pioneers, like Fritz Novotny, who did very much for the austrian avantgare scene. If I remember rite, Burton dug Monk very much and when it was about time to do an encore, he choose "Crepuscule with Nelly". Mr. Novotny later told me it was quite hard a hard time for him to play that tune, I heard a tape, it sounded good..... Quote

flat5 Posted January 9, 2015 Author Report Posted January 9, 2015 I don't see Burton (or anyone) often but we have been friends for 30 years. We live near each other. I played with him a few times but I don't play his music well. He's driven and opinionated. That's not for everyone to be around. He's a good man. Quote
