Ben E. King, singer of such classics as "Stand By Me," ''There Goes My Baby" and "Spanish Harlem," has died.

King died Thursday at age 76, his booking agent Randy Irwin confirmed to CBS News.

That was a voice of the times, to be sure...and he had a career - and hits - past The Drifters years.

I met him (fleetingly) at a soul concert about 15 years ago. He seemed like a genuinely nice person.

Thanks for the music you gave us, Mr. King. (Actually, King was a stage name. Nelson was his family's last name. I met a relative of his when I was giving blood a few years ago, and he told me that Ben E. King was at a recent family reunion.)

He had a great comeback in the 70s too with "Supernatural Thing."
