Hardbopjazz Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 John Coltrane died on 17 July 1967 having given more to jazz in his 40 years than many who live a much longer life. His music has been an inspiration to many rock musicians as well as younger jazz musicians and his album, A Love Supreme, is one of the acknowledged masterpieces in the jazz canon.Read more here.http://www.udiscovermusic.com/man-called-trane Quote
BillF Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 One of those events where you remember where you were, etc. I was outside Leeds Town Hall and read his obituary in a newspaper. I had followed his career pretty avidly from about 1959 when I first heard "Bakai" on Prestige up to Love Supreme, but had then lost touch with his later music as it didn't appeal to me. Quote
paul secor Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 I remember well where I was. I was driving home from a hospital where a friend's first child was born and I heard the news of John Coltrane's death over the car radio. Quote
GA Russell Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 I was vacationing in Spain, and a friend who was an African college student told me that he had died. But I don't know how many days after the event this occurred. Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 I was in the Paris of the Prairies, blissfully unaware of the glories of sax until a few years later. Quote
medjuck Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 (edited) So did Lady Day. (Though not 48 years ago.) Edited July 18, 2015 by medjuck Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted July 18, 2015 Report Posted July 18, 2015 I was working in a record store at 201 N. LaSalle, Chicago, IL. I quickly put "Alabama" on the turntable and went to the back room. Quote
