Dennis Gonzalez New Southern Quintet

This landed on my doormat this morning. I've only had a chance to give it a quick audition in the PC but it sounds great. Well up to the standard of his Silkheart recordings. Good solos from everybody and a spicy collection of compositions. As well as Gonzalez, Tim Green and Andrew Lamb (both new to me) are on reeds. Great Malachi Favors plays bass, the drummer is Alvin Fielder.

This is going to get a lot of plays.

I bought this from Dennis last summer at his gig at Tonic with Ellery Eskelin, Mark Helias and Michael Thompson. I enjoyed the disc and it was a good introduction for me to Andrew Lamb and Tim Green. At the show they performed tunes from Old Time Revival and I think I enjoyed the live performances a little more. I know the gig was recorded and that the group was going to record a few more tunes together. I believe a disc on the same label as Old Time Revival is due out later in the year. Trust me, if you enjoy this disc you are going to want to grab up the live stuff by this quartet as soon as it comes out.

This is a great recording. I heard a piece from it on WREK (Atlanta) and bought the CD. I keep discovering something new in it every time I hear it.

I like this record. I struggle with avant garde, free, etc, (even the proper "label" to put on it) because I often can't find the blues hook in it for me. Dennis' music is rooted in the blues and so his music always pulls me in. Not only is he a very fine musician, he's also a very nice human being.

Dennis sent me a cdr of this a while back. It has now been released as a "regular" cd by Entropy. I suggest all investigate the Entropy catalog at their site for a bunch of interesting stuff. Support the indies!

I've enjoyed Dennis Gonzalez's New Southern Quintet CD many times. It's also my favorite music that he's recorded since his Silkheart days -- better, in fact, because now I can hear the music even better/deeper than back then.

I also can recommend checking out the Entropy Stereo catalog. My favorite recordings on that Michigan label are the Dennis Gonzalez CD, the wonderful live recording by Griot Galaxy recorded at the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1983, and two of the Northwoods Improvisers CDs - "Ashirai Pattern" (with Faruq Z. Bey and Mike Carey) and the Northwoods Improvisers' last trio recording, "Branches".

I haven't heard this cd, but I eagerly recommend Andrew Lamb's 'Portrait in the Mist'. Give it a listen!
