Brad Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 I was listening to Volume 3 this afternoon and the liner notes indicated that what's in the three discs were taken from "scores" of performances between 1978 and 1979. In his liner notes, Michael Cuscuna says that "these tapes are a welcome edition to the documentation of Dexter's wonderful quartet. Hopefully, there will be more to come." I don't know if he's referring to more Keystone performances to come or performances from his quartet of George Cables, Rufus Reid and Eddie Gladden. Does anybody know if there are other unreleased performances in the can? Perhaps if so, they'd be part of the Select that will come out eventually. Quote
Michael Fitzgerald Posted February 29, 2004 Report Posted February 29, 2004 Without question there are additional performances by that band (and by other DG quartets - with Kirk Lightsey and David Eubanks). Reportedly, Todd Barkan taped every show at the Korner so the run including 10/29/81 (with Lightsey, Eubanks, Gladden) probably exists. Also the runs including 12/74 (personnel unknown), 5/30/77 (with Woody Shaw & Louis Hayes), and 12/2/77 (Cables, Reid, Gladden). The DG quartet elsewhere - Storyville has a recent issue from EJ's in Atlanta from 5/5/81 with Lightsey & Reid. There was a bootleg on West Wind from 10/78 from Rome that has 2 long tunes (My Secret Love & Tanya). However, I am skeptical that we will see more Keystone material in a legit issue anytime soon. Brad Posted February 29, 2004 Author Report Posted February 29, 2004 Thank you for the answer Mike and good to see you back. I wonder if the Select will contain some of those performances. However, there may be enough in the issued ones to fill the 3 cd allotment. Quote

Brad Posted March 1, 2004 Author Report Posted March 1, 2004 Jim, when is this coming out? Did this just came in from an email from Peter Crawford? Somehow, I must not be getting his emails. Anyway, great to hear. I'll be ordering tomorrow. Quote
TedR Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Has Manhattan Symphonie (Columbia) made it to cd yet? That was one of my favorite listens when I had a working turntable. Quote

Yeah, Brad, I got the news via an e-mail from Mr. Crawford. I think it's been available since 2/18. MANHATTAN SYMPHONIE came out on CD around the early 90's as part of the French Sony/Columbia Jazz Passport/Jazz Originals series. I suppose it's been o.o.p. for quite a few years. Quote

Does anyone know what Rufus Reid is playing on these dates? Speculation flying in the studio on Friday: Close-mic bass? Electric? Ampeg baby bass? --eric Quote

mikeweil Posted March 1, 2004 Report Posted March 1, 2004 Does anyone know what Rufus Reid is playing on these dates? Speculation flying in the studio on Friday: Close-mic bass? Electric? Ampeg baby bass? When I saw the quartet with Lightsey, Reid and Galdden Reid had a full upright bass with a pickup. No microphone. Sound was okay on the gig; I never heard the Keystone CDs, but will go for the Mosaic Select. Quote
