Cal Tjader - Breathe Easy (Galaxy, 1978) with Hank Jones, Monty Budwig, and Shelly Manne Given the suggestive (porn-like? porn-y? porno-esque?) cover photo, you might reasonably expect equally suggestive wocka-wocka guitars and funky electric basses. But no. It's just a chilled-out, straight-ahead session of jazz standards. One "Hey, it's the 1970's!" aspect of the LP: Hank Jones mostly sticks to electric piano -- which isn't an issue for me, although it might be a source of frustration for others. Quote

duaneiac Posted September 19, 2018 Report Posted September 19, 2018 Kind of appropriate, given the album title, that the image is somewhat skewed. I still miss Jazzbo (aka Jazzbeaux) -- he truly was one of a kind. The main musician of interest to me here is Bob Wilber, playing in a more modern, less swing/traditional mode than I'm used to hearing him play. 2 hours ago, HutchFan said: One "Hey, it's the 1970's!" aspect of the LP: Hank Jones mostly sticks to electric piano -- which isn't an issue for me, although it might be a source of frustration for others. Giving Hank Jones an electric piano is like giving Hank Aaron an aluminum bat! Quote

I'd be disappointed if Jones always played electric piano. But, since he didn't, I don't mind hearing it occasionally. Just my take, of course! Quote
JSngry Posted September 19, 2018 Author Report Posted September 19, 2018 Giving Hank Jones an electric piano is like giving Hank Aaron a basketball - different game altogether, although in both, hand/eye coordination and quick reaction time (or the lack thereof) will make you or break you. Quote

Is Hank Aaron a better baseball player or basketball player. I think we know the answer, and that applies to the discussion of Hank Jones. Hank Jones may be acceptable playing the different game, but far superior playing the game he knows best, and had been playing for the vast majority of his life. Quote
JSngry Posted September 19, 2018 Author Report Posted September 19, 2018 I've never seen Hank Aaron play basketball (casually or otherwise), so I don't know the answer to that question. If you have, then I'll stipulate to your opinion. I'll tell you who was a good basketball player - Tommy Flanagan (no, not the Jon Lovitz character). People who freak out about Rhodes "just because" are like people who eat rice with a knife. Quote
paul secor Posted September 19, 2018 Report Posted September 19, 2018 "People who freak out about Rhodes "just because" are like people who eat rice with a knife." What does that mean, beyond being a stupid cheap shot? No one responding freaked out over an electric piano, Quote
JSngry Posted September 19, 2018 Author Report Posted September 19, 2018 Until now! Seriously, it means nothing other than one thing is absurd, and so is the other. But if you get fed, hey. I very much like that Flanagan cut, btw. What he plays sounds better to my ears played on the Rhodes than it would on an acoustic. Any pianist with ears to hear knows that they're not the same instrument and adjusts accordingly. Quote
HutchFan Posted September 19, 2018 Report Posted September 19, 2018 No electric piano on this one. Lots of heavy bari-playing tho'! Quote

There are some who have a different opinion, and prefer to hear the acoustic piano played by musicians such as Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Cedar Walton and many others. Perhaps holding an opinion with which you do not agree is your definition of "freaking out"? Or maybe you meant that holding an opinion different than yours is absurd? Quote
JSngry Posted September 19, 2018 Author Report Posted September 19, 2018 Geez, touchy today, aren’t we! Old people should bond, not bite! I personally believe that what ultimately matters is what is played rather what it is played on. I also believe that anybody who feels otherwise is just being silly. I myself am often silly about any number of things, so...it’s not an issue for me, being silly. I would encourage more silliness, actually. But not stupidity. THAT would be wrong! Quote
JSngry Posted September 19, 2018 Author Report Posted September 19, 2018 That bass voice...where have they all gone? Dare we consider the conspiratorial emasculation card? Quote
