Time flies: When I first listened to this, it was recorded (on Juli 31th 1964) About 10 years ago. Now it´s 55 years ago.

I think it´s one of Bud´s best latterday Studio Albums. I like most the Parker associated tunes "Little Willie Leaps" "Moose the Mooche" and "Relaxin at Camerillo".

Maybe Bud´s Performances were a bit uneven in his later years. His next Studio Album "The Return of Bud Powell" is still very fine, but it seems he was in lesser form on it. But still very fine….

I must've acquired this when I was having issues with a CD drive because I didn't rip it immediately.  I ripped it yesterday and my already very favorable opinion has improved.  Shaw deserves to be remembered for more than his stint with Mingus.  :wub::wub:

Yes, time flies in jazz, as in everything else.

I remember the late Jack Massarik (who was to become jazz correspondent of the London Evening Standard) saying to me of some Getz/Haig/Raney tracks when we were students: "It's amazing to think this music is almost TEN YEARS OLD!!!"

I'll leave it to you pundits to work out the date of that utterance.<_<

but as on so many cover photos I really doubt this was done during the Studio session. My first Monk LP was the paperbag twofer "Monk Complete Genius" from BN, with all the 1947-1952 sessions, and it had exactly this photo with that funny chinese hat in the inner cover .

Gee, I've never thought that the cover picture needed to have anything to do with the actual recording session.  But maybe it does explain this Monk cover:

That is an excellent photographic portrait of the artist as an experienced man.  I'd say the photographer merits a mention if you have that info handy, soulpope.

Now playing:

Ahmad Jamal covering both Billy Joel and Steely Dan on this 1978 album?!?!  My day just got a whole lot better!

Listened to this LP Facsimile Miles Davis disc from 2000, DSD mastering, best I've heard this title on digital in stereo. Lovely sound!

My favorite Zoot Sims recording. :tup

I also like this record very much. But some of the best Zoot Sims I heard on the Prestige Album Tenor Enclave.

And if you want to hear some really rare Zoot Sims, I´d recommend the set he did with the Bud Powell Trio in Paris in the early 60´s.

You can find it as Bud Powell at the Blue Note Cafe, the label is ESP Disk.

Zoot Plays very fine versions of "Takin a Chance of Love", "Groovin High" and "Bud´s Blues"...…..

Here: This is the Album cover of the CD where Zoot Sims Plays with Bud !

Brings some great memories back. I heard it first on Radio when it was brand new. We had a Wonderful hour of jazz Weekly on Saturday "Jazz Shop" About new records. And this one was something Special when it came out in 1977.

Yesterday this received several spins, the last with my conga drum students who understood what makes the groove on these tracks so great.  A must for all fans of Armando Peraza!

My friendship with this album has blossomed into a full-blown love affair.  I remember listening to it several times and liking it when I bought it in January of last year.  It was in the month leading up to my daughter's birth, so maybe I was too distracted to realize how great this album is.
