jazzbo Posted December 16, 2024 Report Posted December 16, 2024 Erroll Garner “Nightconcert” Octave Records cd I think of the two dozen or more Garner cds I have I would keep this one if I could only have one. It’s just so HIM. Sometimes I hear five or more pianists in Garner while he is still wholly himself. I hear Hines. Waller. Monk. Even aspects of Jarrett before there was Jarrett. Amazing concert, so fortunate it was captured. Quote

jazzbo Posted December 17, 2024 Report Posted December 17, 2024 Since it was still in the transport, and I love it so, I’m re-listening to this one as my first disc of the day. Such magnificent playing full of confidence and the joy of music-making. Such a personal touch and flow. . .I especially love how the introductions morph into the “tune.” Great recording as well. Erroll Garner “Nightconcert” Mack Avenue cd Quote
jazzbo Posted December 17, 2024 Report Posted December 17, 2024 (edited) Charles Tolliver Music Inc “Live at the Captain’s Cabin” Cellar Live 2 cd set, disc 1 My second time listening to this one. I wish the sound were better, it’s okay. . . Quite a performance. My interest in this sort of jazz has waned over the years. . . I used to much more excited by Tolliver’s conception and execution before. But I’m glad this has been released. My esteem for John Hicks has grown over the years so I am quite happy he is in the piano chair. Edited December 17, 2024 by jazzbo Quote

Clear and punchy in the LP version. It's an excellent performance by Music Inc. and I agree that John Hicks is on fire on that reasonably respectable club upright. Knowing Edmonton pretty well and not having otherwise heard of the 'Captain's Cabin' venue, which was defunct after the 70s I think after Edmonton Jazz Society moved into their long-term Yardbird Suite venue, I worked out the location. Turns out it was in the upmarket residential district of Strathcona, to the South of the downtown core. Edited December 17, 2024 by sidewinder Quote
