Sunset was a budget label for what by then was all things Liberty...I am interested in what these recordings were sourced from...Columbia seems unlikely...maybe Everest? https://www.discogs.com/release/3437403-Woody-Herman-The-Herd-Rides-Again But how did that get over to Liberty? I have them but at some certain point they started to bore me because I started to get bored by the hard bop style and kept only stuff like "Soul Station" on my current playlist. But for some small hours listening when I lay down and close my eyes to relax a bit before falling asleep it might be nice again. A very good bebop record. So many don´t know Miles before the "First Quintet" but he was strong between 1949-1951 doing almost as quick and fast like Diz or Fats, but all his own. Very fine. And he had the best players, Jackie McLean, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Art Blakey.....I also like the 1951 Birdland recordings very much. I love it. I love music that is like a prayer, like this one or ascension or Pharoah Sanders "The Creator..." or Alice Coltrane, it really inspires me, though I am a devout polytheist, but very religious in that manner...... It's how I forget about football😁 Quote

I wish I knew who the guitarist was. Quote

I dig all of them. That period is very appealing to me for a few reasons. One is no modal tunes, second is no boog-a-lou or otherwise commercially oriented tunes. This album is a beauty. The tune "Bag's Groove" has been recorded numerous times. The version here is one of my favorites. Bill Hardman's trumpet solo is, to my ears PERFECT. Then Sonny Clark and Mobley play ideally within this idiom. Big heart for Hank. This is hard to find in any format. Japanese have it at a resonable price, why haven't BN ever released a format, e.g., CD in America? This original pressing on a good day at auction goes for 6K ( I know like Tina Brook's True Blue was a low pressing) Is that it? Is the music that good? You say "perfect" I am glad you have a copy, now I want a copy! Edited 8 hours ago by Holy Ghost Quote

jazzbo Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago Duke Ellington “Vol 6 1929” Masters of Jazz Media 7 cd. This one sounds best to me with Phase reversed on my DAC. I feel an early Ellington jag coming on. It happens. This music is so full of joy and wit and bravado and grace. . . wonderful stuff. Quote

Now spinning: must be also great, though this year I clearly prefer the post 1965 stuff of Trane, when Pharoah Sanders joined the band. Dolphy is great and was one of the first musicians that thrilled me. Quote
