This reminds me of a passage from a textbook on critical thinking.  The book would have short examples of lapses in critical thinking.  One read something like, 'Having encountered a bear in the national park, a woman smeared honey on her child's hand in order to take a picture of the bear licking the child.  Failing to understand this, the bear ate the child's hand.'  The story still saddens and horrifies me 15 years later.
