Big Al Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Me & the fambly are hittin' the road for a trip to Austin and I'm looking for something we can all listen to on the drive down & back. We've got the old Cosby tapes, but I was wondering if any of you have any suggestions of humor on tape/CD. (Bear in mind the kids are 8 and 17, so tastes may vary. A lot!) Thanks as always! Quote
BERIGAN Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Well, wasn't quite sure if language was going to be that big a deal or not...to seem old(I am not THIS old) As a kid, I loved hearing Bob Newhart old records(Usually on airplanes) I think his humor is pretty darn universal, just don't tell the kids how old this album is! I was thinking Steve Martin, but then I remembered some lines from his records "GRANDPA.......BOUGHT A RUBBER!" and then the joke about his girlfriend having a such a nice pussy(He was talking about her cat, of course!) and then the joke goes on from there.... How about Jean Shepard??? Safe, and funny! Quote
scottb Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Jeff Foxworthy. I think he would be good for all ages and pretty clean. At a recent family reunion, some of the kids probably 10-12 yrs old had one of his his tapes and it had everyone laughing regardless of age. I found myself enjoying it much more that I expected. One part that I remember a joke about his family going to the airport with an igloo and Pigley Wigley bags for luggage! Quote
Brandon Burke Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 (edited) Always a good idea. In fact, forget that it's a comedy record, I like these tunes anyway! I listen to it like it's a "regular" album. I find it difficult not to be in a good mood when this thing's on..... Welcome to Austin, by the way. Lemme know if I can be of assistance. .:.impossible Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Check this guy out. I think he is hilarious. I have his Comedy Central gig on vhs. I think he is pretty clean, though I haven't had a chance to catch him in person, and I haven't heard his CDs. He has some audio clips on his site so you can screen him before you make the purchase. Mitch Hedberg! Quote
PHILLYQ Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 What about Sinbad? I played one of his standup performances(on video) for a multi-generational crowd on a Thansgiving and everyone was howling- no cursing, no sexual stuff, but good old belly laughs all around. Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 I guess Andrew Dice Clay is out then ... though I always laugh at his version of "Jack and Jill went up the hill" Quote
Chrome Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 You might consider looking into a portable DVD player for the backseat crew. They make aftermarket ones designed specifically for in-vehicle use ... I don't know how pricey they are, though. Quote
Peter Johnson Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Bill Cosby! If you haven't heard his send up of the dentist visit, you'll nearly drive off the road from laughing. Quote
robviti Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Bill Cosby! If you haven't heard his send up of the dentist visit, you'll nearly drive off the road from laughing. dentist: okay, go ahead and rinse. patient: what? dentist: rinse? patient: how can i rinse when i don't have a bottom lip? (his lip is numb from novocaine) dentist: just give it a try. patient: okay (he dribbles all over himself) patient: i hope you are satisfied! this routine is indeed a classic. so is "chocolate cake for breakfast." Jim R Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Al, Al, Al... recorded comedy? Come on, now. Don't you have enough puns to last you to Austin? Seeing as you'll be driving through Texas, I think the Jeff Foxworthy suggestion makes good sense. He's very funny, and you may actually pass some "visuals" to go along with the audio. Quote
JSngry Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Jeff Foxworthy? Y'all not from these parts are ya'... What he talks about, we see enough of in our daily lives. We make our own jokes. Quote
JSngry Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 A stop at the Taco Bell in Hillsborough will accomplish much the same thing... Quote
catesta Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Good point, plus all the comedy comes with a free meal. Quote
JSngry Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Yeah, the musical fruit provides a floor show and-a-half! Quote
catesta Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 Makes me want to take a road trip my damn self. Quote
Alec Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 My pick would have to be Bob & Ray. They never fail to crack me up! Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 w.c. fields -- the kids will get their books and/or gameboys out... bill cosby -- get the one w/ the chicken heart that ate new york city is there any old bob newhart on disc? my favorite comedy Lp were National Lampoon "That's Not Funny. That's Sick" and "Radio Dinner". Never saw these on disc. Quote
Big Al Posted March 14, 2004 Author Report Posted March 14, 2004 Many thanks to all for your suggestions. Jeff Foxworthy... yeah, comedy to y'all; documentary for Texans (stolen from a billboard for King of the Hill; just as true, though) Bob Newhart..... yes! I've got the compilation Something Like This which never fails to send me into conniptions! Cosby.... oh yeah, we'll be taking those with us! "My father never turned the doorknob to get into my bedroom in his life...... PKSSSSHHHHHH!!!!!!" I just wish I wasn't the only one in my family who enjoys the old radio programs, especially Jack Benny. While I'm rolling on the floor, the rest of them are just kinda lookin' at me...... So, tomorrow morning we'll be hitting the road with the aforementioned Cosby tapes, "Stay Fit & Healthy 'til Your Dead" by Dave Barry (read by Arte Johnson), some Garrison Keillor comedy compilation (got the previous two from the library), and "The Collected e-mails of Jim R as Written to Big Al and Read by the Author." (Okay, I made up that last one; it would still have me in stitches)! See y'all in a few daze! Quote
