Joe Posted December 1, 2020 Report Posted December 1, 2020 A most enjoyable BFT, featuring some of my favorite musicians. Can't believe I could not place the Khan Jamal track. Quote
Dub Modal Posted December 1, 2020 Report Posted December 1, 2020 Agree, very enjoyable. Big takeaways for me are the players on 2, 4, 6 & 9. That's a few times George Adams has hooked me. I need to pick up some of his albums. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted December 1, 2020 Report Posted December 1, 2020 I am going to get the Sahib Shihab, NHOP/Sam Jones, Hugh Ragin and Billy Bang albums right now! This is a great BFT. Thanks for putting it together! Quote

I'm a George fan, but sadly, much of his output is made up of albums with two strong tracks and a lot of filler thereafter, IMHO. This one and Sound Suggestions on ECM are the standouts in my collection (if you want to save a little cash). City Gates is fair, Earth Beams is good. After that, I find them inconsistent at best. Particularly with the Adams-Pullen Quartet setting, where it became an exercise in how-fast-can-we-play. In general, that band would have benefited greatly from shaving 20BPM off the pace most of the time. Quote

JSngry Posted December 1, 2020 Report Posted December 1, 2020 It's beautiful. Crazy, and/but beautiful. Quote
Hot Ptah Posted December 1, 2020 Report Posted December 1, 2020 (edited) My favorite George Adams albums are Charles Mingus’ Changes One and Changes Two, Paradise Space Shuttle, Sound Suggestions, and Hand to Hand (which he co-led with Dannie Richmond). Edited December 1, 2020 by Hot Ptah Quote
