  1. Correct! I've gone slowly through that box set which has paid off. It's got some excellent tracks on it. Took me a a few listens to warm up to it but the album this comes from is definitely worthwhile. It's the only one I have from him at the moment.
  2. Bingo.
  3. Not Abe. But will confirm the sax player is Japanese. Glad you enjoyed it!
  4. Not that Parker album, but it's his leader date. Track 3 isn't a Taiwanese player, but if you remember that name please drop it. I'd love to check that out.
  5. You're not far off on the folk element geography. I was worried that maybe I was hearing things, so I'm glad that my hint made at least some sense to you. And you got William Parker on 9. Not Hamid Drake or Carter though...
  6. Not Lao Dan. I've actually not heard him before but will be checking his music out. Yes, shakuhachi is on 9. Good call.
  7. Nice. Thank you. My CD player has likely gone kaput so I'll be pricing options in the near future and will check this out.
  8. Does this route play redbook, sacds, etc?
  9. I didn't want what Allen said to be true since it was based on an excerpt, but I started reading my copy this weekend and it wasn't until chapter 3 that discussion on Kenny finally started. There's some great info otherwise on Texas, Jim Crow and racially driven murders in the region, and other "quality of life at the time" descriptions. But when one's time for leisurely reading isn't much, it kind of sucks wading through all of this data before we get to the topic at hand. So I agree, editing would have been nice. I had a history prof tell me once long ago that my report missed the forest for the trees. I got caught up in minutia and presenting data points but forgot to tell the actual story. Seems like that applies here too. Maybe it gets better going forward. I sure hope so.
  10. Tax week hint for those still sleuthing: Track 3: I don't know of any specific Ayler connection but the comparison, or rather inspiration by, seems right. If you have ears for this song to listen again, see if you can pick out the folk forms this sax player is incorporating. It took me a few times but once I picked up on that, the full spectrum of their playing came into much better focus. It's not just angry. There's a lot of different emotions being expressed, and passionately at that. Anyway, I think the folk forms are pretty specific in terms of origin, and if you get them you'll probably get the "where." And then it's probably only a matter of time. Tracks 6 & 9 also not ID'd. Hints on those later if they don't get ID'd.
  11. I have 2 huskies so I know what you mean. Retractable leashes on them would have me in the hospital for sure.
  12. From another perspective, being older right now is likely way better than it's going to be in the future. While I'm not as old as some of you, I'm thankful for experiencing the analog life growing up and very happy to be lucky enough that it was without social media. I'll take the aches, pains etc all day every day over being in my 20s right now. The future looks bleak af and I'm not looking forward to it.
  13. Maybe even talked yourself out of John Hicks on track 7 and Purdie on 10! Your KC note for track 4 was on point. Glad you liked the mix. I figured some different flavors would be appreciated if not enjoyed. Only 3, 6 and 9 remain unidentified. Not even a week in lol. Y'all are damned good at this.
  14. Check. And note the rhythm section roots to Count Basie with Gus Johnson & Freddie Green. They swing like hell on this song to carry Vito, who didn't record another solo record until 2003. Yikes. This particular track taken from this CD.
  15. This is just side 1 right? Sound doesn't bother me and the tunes are pretty good.
  16. Songs 3, 4, 6 and 9 are the remaining tunes not ID'd yet.
  17. Only from your earlier BFT track. It"s what led me to get this live album actually. I had forgotten that you shared this specific track though. I liked it then, so I'm not surprised I picked this one off the album. For anyone who doesn't recall it, this was on BFT 239 when we all donated a track to make a full BFT. Which was a really great idea (from one Dan Gould if I'm not mistaken).
  18. You got it. I love this live album, and the fact that it's dedicated to Abdul Wadud. Dayes' cello is definitely a standout to me.
  19. Indeed #2 is very contemporary, but no Lester St Louis or Tomeka. Can confirm it's on International Anthem. Nice call. No Sakata or Shabaka on 3 and 9.
  20. I feel like in order to guess this one you'd almost have to own it or be extremely familiar with it.
  21. Thanks for the rec. I didn't know about this one at all. I love Chicago. Been several times but the closest I got to jazz was the Jazz Record Mart when it was still downtown. One day I'll catch some live music there.
  22. I knew the Chicago connection made it only a matter of time. Good sleuthing. I only recently came across Mars' work and have been blown away. Thankful for labels like Corbett vs Dempsey that helped get his work out there. I'm finally able to listen to the above video of the original and you're 100% correct. I can't help but think he wanted to re-record that tune, and I'm glad he did.
  23. Nice. I didn't realize it was a remake. The entire album smokes. John Hicks on keys btw. He is amazing on this record.
