Hardbopjazz Posted August 14, 2021 Report Posted August 14, 2021 Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Denzel Best. Who’s on bass and drums? Quote
T.D. Posted August 14, 2021 Report Posted August 14, 2021 (edited) You mean trumpet (Benny Harris) and bass? Eddie Robinson on bass? If correct, credit to Messrs. Google; I didn't recall. The band is named in Kelley's Monk bio, which I've read but no longer own. See e.g. https://www.richardvacca.com/on-march-18-1944/ The relevant excerpt from Kelley is also on Google Books. Big Beat Steve Posted August 14, 2021 Report Posted August 14, 2021 Credit goes elsewhere too. This photograph has been reprinted often. The "Black Beauty White Heat" book (first published in 1982) also indicates the two unknowns are Eddie Robinson and Little Benny Harris (p. 319). So credit goes there. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted August 14, 2021 Report Posted August 14, 2021 How young was Monk here? He looks even younger than I think I’ve ever seen pictures of him — but maybe the profile angle is playing tricks on me. Quote
T.D. Posted August 14, 2021 Report Posted August 14, 2021 Links incl. above indicate the band was formed in early 1944, which would make Monk (b. 10/17) 26. That's a surprise, I agree with you on Monk's youthful appearance in the pic. Quote
